MISCELLANY. - LATE EARTHQUAKE IN NEW ZEALAND. , The London Times contains a letter, da ted on the 5th of Marco last, containinjr V some particulars cf the earthquake' of the -23d of Januarvj-as experienced at the resi dence of the writer, in the valley of the Hutt, and a Wellington, fifty-four 'miles distant, therefrom.' In - the lattef place, since the severe shocks six years ago, the houses have been built of wood,' and in a manner considered "earthquake-proof in consequence of which only one or two were demolished, although some of them were much damaged and much property was destroyed. All the brick and: mortar houses, however, and all v the chimneys were thrown down, although the shocks were thought to be less violent there thart those- at jhe valley. The site of the town " was raised by the first shock about two feet in perpendicular height, and by the' subsequent lighter 'sboaks some inches higher.. One man only was killed in Wei .. ling-ton.. Ifi the--' valley '-five natives were killed in oae house. iThe writer thus "des cribes the effects of the shock at and in the vicinity of his own residence : J:; . "We were sitting round our table with a friend," when, at half-past 9 o'clock at night, without the rumbling notice which earth quakes generally give us, the shock com menced,. The house waved to" and fro, rocked and jumped, as you might fancy a ship would when she strikes on a rock; the lights t were dashed off the tuble, ' books, glass, china, &c. on the shelves r'Qund the room came down, together wiih the chimney, "part of which fell inside "and mixed with the ruins of the furniture, &c. ; Our friend jumped out of the window and clung to a post outside, but was thrown down then, and "obliged to lie on the ground. - I rushed to open the door for fear we should all be jammed in, with no means of taking - the family out of the house, . but it was some time before I could open it, and then only by watching the waving of the house; - and when the door was opened, ' and I let ' go my hold of it, I was thrown down, and ' could not rise on my legs tilt the" shock was over, which lasted about three mm . utes although trying my utmost to get up for the purpose of bringing out the family. No house but one, built with posts let into the ground, and wooden houses put to - gether like a box, as the bouses in this country are, could have outlived such a rattling. ' Ours, though somewhat out of - the perpendicular, ia nov down j the roof, - however, is entirely dislodged, and must be put on again before winter. With a wages at eight shillings a day I hardly know how we shall accomplish it and'get bedding and other stores; for,m addition to the earth quake, a day or two after we had afire "which burnt down our tent, in. which we were obliged to Jive, and every thing in it. 4. Every one in this valley (of the Hull ) liv . ed in tents for some weeks, as the shocks have continued up to the present time, but none have been so severe as the first. This part for many square miles is rent in every . direction cracks in' the ground of many feet in length and from a few inches to several feet deep exist over very large spaces .at short intervals from each other. ' Our hdrsetrack to the river, which is about half a mile off, has more than twenty such across it, twelve of which opened and shut with violence during the shock, and threw water to a considerable height over the surrounding bushes. I saw the Water,' cracks, sand, and mud which .were thrown up the morning after, and glad I was that no fissure had opened nearer to our house . than two hundred yards, 'or it must have come down on us. ':: Fissures opened in two native ,'warriers' to my - knowledge and nearly "smothered. the inmates with water, - besides bringing their light buildings down on them." ...' " . -; - ..; : .; . The writer adds, in another par; of the ; letter : V. ' V i.J. -' "w- ; ; - "I had engaged to, visit a neighbor four teen miles off; but the efectric appearance of the air and very lowering clouds made . me anticipate bad - weather, 'which .might -have detained me from home, and so I re fused to go, providentially as it would ap pear, for the large " brick chimney of 'my friend's only sitting room fell into it, and no one in the room could have escaped." From, the Philadelphia Pennsylvania 13A inst. MORE ABOLITION FANATICISM Col. John II. Wheeler left -he city of Philadelphia the 18th day of July, the day on which he was assaulted and robbed by Passrnore, Williamson, and some twenty other negroes, who forced hi3 servants out of his possession on - board the steamer Washington . He had scarcely left the ci , when a man named . McKim, accom ed an Abolitionist lawyer named Earle. another negro called Still,-presented -.;ise!?e3 n the oCce of Alderman Hib rd, and made the following affidavit, which, is copied as it stands upon the . ALDERMAN'S DOCKET. The information and complaint of Wm. Still, who being affirmed does say,' that i John H. Wheeler did, on the 18th day of July, 1855, -violently - and tumultuously ,6eize upon Jane Johnson and attempt to . carry her away, contrary to her wish, claim ing her as a fugitive from servitude or la bor, and that he attempted to carry away said Jane in a violent, tumultuous and un. reasonable manned contrary to- the act of Assembly of March 3, 1847, in such I case made and provided; said John H- Wheeler 23 also at the same time chared with as sau't and battery on the' person of Jane jc.nson against the aforesaid act of As - c::;bly. ."O' Af... ".eJ and subscribed before me this 11th Jay cf August, 1855. " " V.-'!. STILL. ; r V-y '" '. Ccnimon wealth 1 , , :' '""rr '' ; ; rs ( August 11, 1835. John II. Wheeler. S i -Warrant issued I Tt ' WM. S.TIIBBARD, Aid. 1 ..'Upon this afUdavit, a warrent was js-? sue J, directed ta the constable of the Ward -ivhor'2ir.-r the arrcrt of Mr. Wheeler- :d" xi-vlll'.r'T tn serve the : :-t cf : person of policeman Seed, a Know-Noth-ing and Aboliton ofilcer of Robert T. Con rad,our Know-Notbing and Abolition May or of Philadelphia. Why this warrant was not issued until it was generally' known that Mr. Wheeler had left in the pursuit of his public duties, no one but some of the band of lawless fanatics who infest and dis grace the city of PhilaJeIphia, can tell. For our part, we regret that the warrant had not come sooner, and we also regret that Mr Wheeler has left the State and perhaps the country. If he has not left, we trust be will permit himself to be arres ted by these men; for we forseemuch good is to result from such high-handed, illegal and unwarrantable proceedings. ;i . We presume it was for this object that the money we have heard so much about, was subscribed along Market street, by several merchants who do a large business with the South. If so, there are respoi si ble parlies to look to, and in addition to the claim which will shortly, we understand, be brought before the Circuit Court of the United States for the value of his slaves, and damages for the outrage upon his person, Mr. Wheeler will have another ac tion cognizable in the same Court for con spiracy and malicious, prosecution. This last resort of the negro mob to an noy an unoffending citizen, only shows the desperate lengths to which deluded mono maniacs will go to the accomplishment of their purposes. I AN INGENIOUS DEVICE. The Sultan's favorite dwarf, a man about 40 years of age, and 3 feet high, a few years ago, took a notion to marry, and applied to the Sultan for a wife. The Sul tan gave him permission to go into his ha rem, and take the one whom he could kiss. The dwarf, like all other u.en, was ambi tious to have a long wife. While the Sul tan's five hundred women, who knew the terms according to which the dwarf was permitted to choose, were laughing at the manikin, he went up to one of the tallest and handsomest of them and struck her a sudden blow upon the stomach. She col lapsed with the pain, and before she could recover, he caught her by the neck and gave her the dreaded kiss. The Sultan kept his word, and the tall beauty is now the ino'her of the dwarfs children. f V. L. S.
