Just then, from this sort ; of blissful abandon, I 4 was startled by the report of a gilnshot with in a few paces of me. e I sprang to my feet, and :.withA,atohishment--,- saw.my.; friend Mitchell standing near and gaz ing at me with a fixed look of ghastly horror. Before I could inquire what he meant; my attention was caught by the sound of the most shrill, keen, ringing rattle that ever penetrated- human ear, and on looking down 1 discovered a hugh rattlesnake with " gory head, quiv ering and writhing in the agonies ot death, and sending forth ; from his er- rect tan the terrible tocsin that 1 neard. From his .fearful propinquity I began to" relize . my position, but . not until I heard an. explanation from' M. conld I fully .understand and appreciate its hor- rors, - - - .-.; vhr.'-v f He told me that my resting place was the tbps.oi a rattlesnakes;; den, and poin ted out ' the orifices though which they passed ; that he was in the habit of mmg there on; Sunday evenings to shoot rattlesnakes : that is when he ap proached that evening, and saw me ly ing upon the den, he supposed 1 had been- bitten , and was dead ; that he crept nearer, and saw my . respiration, and knew I was alive, but discovered a' monstrous snake licking my hand and covering it with a slimy coating, perpa- ratpry to deglutition ; that he made a slight, involuntary, shuddering excla mation of " MyGod !" which drew the. snake's attentionstnd caused him to turn his head, when he discharged a load of buck-shot into his face and neck, mang ling and tearing them to pieces, and thus saved my life. He had scarcely told me this, which atook but.a moment. when rattles all around brought us to a recollection that we were not free from danger. ;AVVe saw ten or fifteen large rattlesnakes approaching us from every quarteivtwith ey"es glaring revengefully, barbed tongues thrusting threateningly and rattles sounding alarmingly. They are brave and cannot be : intimidated, and will die over the dead body of their companion sooner than desert it. We knew the indomitable character of our e lemy, and . .M. and I," with his double- barreled gun, and my sticks and stqnes fought our way out as best we could. You may imagine that my nerves were slightly" agitated that evening andjhat V dreamed of snakes that night. Ttf. killed one hundred and seven of them the largest of which had tweuty-six rattles. ' , A. widow : woman named Crimmins, and her five children, two ; boys and three girls, came very near dying on Thursday night of last week, at New Orleans, from having eaten at supper a mess ot cooked toadstools, which tne boys had gathered across the river in mistake for mushrooms." In fifteen min utes after eating, they were taken down deathly sick j. physicians were speedily sent 'for emetics and stomach-pumps brought into requisition and the fami ly were fortunately saved. Two of the younger children, however, wavered be tween life'; and death , till Friday fore noon, when the skill of the physicians triumphed. It was a fearful time they all had, and a happy deliverance. No one ought-! to gather . mushrooms, or at tempt to do so, as the Cresent very tru ly remarks, without being perfectly com petent to distinguish the poisonous from the edible kind. . u r , "MATT WARD NOTORIETY."
