WHOLE NUMBER 1174 VOLUME X -NUMBER 74. WILMINGTON, N. C.r TUESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 4, 1855. MISCELLANY. :.-;' MILITARY VISIT. It is stated that the fifty-third regi ment of the citizen volunteers of balti .more, at a recent meeting, decided to visit .Mount Vernon on the 12th of Sep tember. They will arrive iti Washing tori by a special" train of cars, and pro ceed to that place in a steamer charter ed for the purpose. There are nine com- effective" force of nearly four- hundred men-. '- : A little girl saw tier Drottier playing i r t i i i i 1 Willi ins uuriuug yids, uiiu tiau tieiu him talk.about the ;'focus.'T Not knowing what the word focus meant, she consul ted the dictionary. At dinner, when jlui family were assembled, she announ ced as grand as dould be, that she knew the meaning of one hard word. Her father asked her what it was ; she said it was the word focus. . '.Well Manr" cai1 ivhnt drws it It V II IIIUI j V ...aw. - - " ih an ?" "Why, it means a place where they raise calves?" she replied. This of- course raised a gieat laught, but she stuck to her point, and produced Iter dictionary, to prove that she was .right..,;, ''There," said she, triumphantly, 'Fo cus a place where the rays meet.' Cal ves are meat, and if they raise meet they raise calves and so I am right." TOMATO PRESERVES. As the-season is now at hand for the honsewiiB to prepare tor preserves, and as the tomato now forms an almost in dispensable article in this line of delica cies, the following receipt may not be without service: The yellow tomato is said lo be the best. Take of this variety, as soon as ripe, scald and peal ; and to every sev cu, pounds of the fruit " add an equal quantity of white sugar, and boil the syr up, removing the scum. Put in the to- xiiuiues, aim uuu gtiiiiy - iwcmy minu tes: remove the fruit aeain. and boil 7 - - - j the syrup until it thickens. On it cool ins. out the fruit inlo iars and pour the syrup over it, adding a few slices of lem on to each jar and you will have a preserve at oncehealthy and most pleas ing to the taste. FATAL ACCIDENT. The Rochester Advertiser gives the followiug particulars of a fatal accident at Waterloo, whereby a man lost his lite. It snouid be a warning to omers. "As three men were working at the bottom of a well in this village on the :22nd inst., which was being deepened for the use of a distellery on the 'Low er Island," a stone weighing between 300 to 400 pounds became loose from the side, about ten feet above tliem, stri king one of them on the leg, fearfully crushing it in pieces from the ancle" to the thigh. He was taken home in the greatest agony, and after intense suffer ius died in a few hours. His name, as we learn, was John Dadee." A PHILOSOPHICAL HUSBAND The wife of Dr. D-, of Moweaqua, Illinois, has eloped with his student, leaving her two children. A private letter says the philosophical doctor knew she intended to elope, but didn't think it worth while to introduce any preven tives. RUSSIAN TA CTICS. A late English paper says : "We have . received unpleasant news from Kerth. The Russians, it appears, have burnt the corn stores in the town, so that the arrangements made for the ex portation of the grain by the admirals and command-in-chief cannot be carried into effect. This will prove a loss to our merchants who had already des patched - ; vesj-els - to load wheat at Kertrh" POTATO RIOT. The editor of the Manchester Mirror hears complaints from various parts of New Hampshire of the potato rot, and , says that there are apprehensions that in some localities it will destroy whole field s,of potatoes. The same statements are applicable tof Massachusetts. But -although we hear of the existence of the jot in limited localities, there is no doubt as the safety of the general crop. RATHER VERDANT. The Rensselaer manor tenants once held a meeting, and resolved that the payment of one-tenth of the produce was too heavy a rent, and agreed unani mously thereafter that they would pay 4ut one-sixth' They never discovered heir mistake until the reut became due. - "OUR NEW BURYING GROUND." First old woman- 'What does the minister say to our new burying grourid?' Second old woman "He don't like it at all, he says he never will be buried there, as long as he lives." First old woman "Well, if the Lord spares me. I will Kenneth Ra y nek, in a late speech, is reported to have said : "Give us A m'erican politics and American religion." To which the Terre Haute (Ind.) Jour nal rejoins : "We don't know of any American religion, except Mormonism, S hake rism, arid Mi! lerism. The se a re native American religions. The Chris tian "relisioh. we believe, is of foreien origin, and its founder not a native of America. THE BITE OF A RATTLE SNAKE A: correspondent of the Boston Trans script say: "Many may wonder why the bite of the rattlesnake is so fatal. The reasons are timf ly these. The poison, or the fluid which acts as such, issues from the fangs, and m secreated in the wound made by the bite. This fluid chills and crystallizes the blood, and a benumbing steals gradually over the frame, like that felt by a freezing person the blood being like water in a freezing state. Some years ago a physician was bitten by a rattle snake; but, unfortunately, though he cured many of various kinds of diseases, he could not cure himself, nor could he be cured by any of his brother physicians; and in one or two hours he died a martyr to bis own ignorance with the antidote within arm's reach, and which, if taken in time, would have sa ve! his life; and even nowihereare like cases in the papers, whictr prove be yond a doubt, that the fact is not known as it ought to be, that biandy or rum taken immediately ufter the bite, or as soon as convenient, and in such quantity as to make a person tipsy, will destroy the ef fects of the posion, and serve as a safe and sure antidote." 'Sambo, I went a gunning t'oder day 1 seed four coons, and shot tie biggest one out ob de lot. How many was dere left?' ; Vy, dree ob course.' 'No, Pomp dere was only one left.' 'tDw's diit, Sambo?' 4 Kuze, after I shot htm, de rest all run away. Yah ! yah !' Now, Siimbo, as you be so brrry cleb ber can you tell nm which side ob dat coon had de most hair on't.' " 'No, Pomp, can't tell dat,1 nor you. ne- der.' ' liut I can, though. Vy. don't you see, it was de outside, you black nigger, you !' A gentleman who had no ear for music, persuaded a fair friend to give him a few lessens, vocal and instrumental In return be presented- her with a pair of ear-rings. 'Very appropriate gift, said the witty dam sel; 'It was fitting you should give me ear-rings after having bored my ears ' - A RIPE OLD AGE. Mrs. Mary Farrar, wife of the Rev. Jos. Farrar, died at Petersham, Worcester co , Mass., on Friday, 24th inst , aged 100 year, 6 months and 20 days ! She sustained her faculties, was about the house and in her usual health till three days before her de cease. I MONUMENT TO A BLACK. The Richmond Enquirer advocates the errection of a monument to the mem ory of Peter FranciscOj a colored man, born a slave in Virginia but emancipa ted at the commencement of the revolu tion, and enlisted as a soldier. He ser ved all through the war, and was sub sequently sergeant-at-arms of the Vir ginia Legislature. j A MODEL HUSBAND. The Richmond (Va.) Despatch says there is a negro man in that" city who, for the last twenty years, has never failed to walk four miles at night to visit his wife, and to return to his employ ment. "Mr. Jones, don 'f you think that mar riage is a means f grace ?" "Certain ly ; anything is a means of grace that breaks up pride, and leads to repen tance." Scene closes with a broom-handle. iThe Boston Post says art has been called "a dangerous gift" but the man who made the remark was in no per sonal peril. All gifts are dangerous except those to editors. i LETTERS I'O the Right Rev. John Hughes. Roman Cath olic Bi-hoi of New York. " Revised and enlar, gcd. By Kirwan. For sale al Aug. 28. S. W.
