Mr. Springer, who has been here several days, and Senator Palmer, the two principal 'sound money Democrats of Illinois now in Washington, speak as if they thought it was a hopeless case for their friends in Illinois. Mr. Springer says that it does not look as if the 'sound money' men were doing anything toward carry iug the delegation. "This is only surface talk. "The fact is thz t, as quietly as possible, the administration people are putting forth a trc nendous effort to capture the Illinois delegation. "It is not intended to leave it to the lo cals only, but to get all possible aid from the 'sound money' Democrats of the east, chiefly in New York and Mass?chusetts, and to use the influence of the nation"! administration. Ex-Representative Ben. Cable and Mr. Springer through hisvlieu tenants at home are conducting a quiet and earnest campaign. Their efforts are at present directed chiefly to the capture of the Cook county delegates, who con trol about 40 per cent, of the State con vention. , "Mr. Cable is quoted as reporting that the DroSDects are vprv o-ood fnr snrrpss in . r - - j e - lok county, though a few days ago he expressed a different opinion. It is said that the renewed hopefulness is due, not to Mr. Carlisle's visit to Chicago, but to the expectation that ex-Mayor Hopkins wui repudiate Altgeld and to his determi nation to throw big influence in favor of the anti silver people. ."The claim that Hopkins will throw the Cook county delegates against Alt Reld comes from administration sources, it is understood that Bvnum of Indiana and Cable of Illinois, when they came to Washington a few days ago, made very discouraging reports to the President from heir respective States, and steps were taken to strengthen the lines. It is un derstood that the President has sought to impress unpon the 'sound money' Demo crats of flip pact tVif :c - -u jetne Chicago convention they must pve substantial assitance to their Mends ln Indiana and Illinois." W.ords of au honest man, a Demo Dd a lover of his State and, people. ton Messenger" IPtteentativo Henderson is out in a ue is claimed to, be "a sound money" man. whatever that toe nomenclature of latter-day converts to gold. But we find this in his letter, and it is nearly all we have read of it, and con strued by the laws of language it does not autnonze us or any one to say he has de serted the party platform and surrendered bag and baggage "horse, foot and dra goons" to the "sound money" gold only uemanas oi me JNortn. Mr. Henderson says this : "Personally I am not for gold mono metallism, and I am not for silver mono metallism. I am, as I have always been, for bi metallism. Ten years ago I said that the people 'were determined to retain silver as a currency and to protect the dollar ot their fathers as a eood. honest dollar and to keep it on a par with gold.' I nave never entertained other views, annougn 1 have voted for free coinage when I believed the standard dollar could be maintained and circulated at its coin age value on a parity with the gold dol Mr, Henderson is a man of excellent character, of good parts, a lawyer of repu tation. Personally we. have not a word to say to his detriment. If he has really flopped it will mortify manv friands and lessen the confidence of the masses in their leaders, and public servants. The Char lotte Observer heads the Representative's long article "J. S. Henderson for Sound Money Makes a Bold Stand for Princi ple." All that do not agiee with what he has written, whatever it is, may be con sidered as not "standing for principle." Save the mark! That may look as if he has come to the parting of the ways and that he and his old party friends are no longer agreed. If that should be the fact, and we do not say it is, then who has left the party? It is certainly very perplexing to ordinary mortals to understand the talk now. Eeinlt of Cleveland's Befusing Belligerency. Wilmington Messenger. The Cubans know now that capture means death. Few prisoners are taken and the wounded are all murdered. Such is Havana news of the 22d. The black flag now floats. A dispatch from London to the New York Tribune of the 24tb, states that the Standard published a Madrid dispatch say ing that the Spaniards put their trust in Cleveland, and have never doubted that he would refuse to recognize the belliger ency of Cuba. The News Is Eight. Wilmington Messenger. The Richmond Times gives notice that if the Democrats adopt a free silver plat form it will bolt, kick out, go over to the enemy. This moves the Lynchburg News to-say that it will be "the very best thing that could happen to the Democratic party."
