American Legion Post 20 of Hoke County meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Edinborough Restaurant at 7:30 p.m. Those interested in joining are invited. COUNTY COMMISSION - Members of the Hoke County Commission meet the first Monday of each month at 9 a.m. and the third Monday at 7:30 p.m. Pratt Building located at 227 N. Main St. in Raeford. The public is invited. CITY COUNCIL ? The Raeford City Council meets the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in City Hall. The public is encouraged to atlend. SCHOOL BOARD -- The Hoke County Board of Educa tion meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the board offices on Wooley Street. The public is encourag ed to attend. AL ANON ? Meetings are held every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Hoke County Health Department Conference Room. Jan. 13 TOBACCO MEETING - The Hoke County Agricultural Ex tension Service will conduct its annual tobacco education meeting Friday, Jan. 13. from 9 a.m. to noon in the assembly room of the T.B. Lester Building on Magnolia Street in Raeford. Gatherings Dec. 24 CHRISTMAS CAROLS - St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church located on Hwy. 401 will have a midnight mass ser vice for Christmas Carols will be sung beginning at 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 24 with mass to follow. The community is in vited to attend. Dec. 25 CHRISTMAS PROGRAM -- St. James United Church of God will be sponsoring their Christmas Program on Sun day. Dec. 25 beginning at 4. Events thru Dec. 23 CHRISTMAS CAROL - The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival in association with and sponsored by the Community Theatre of Greensboro, the High Point Community Theatre and [he Little Theatre of Winston-Salem will present the yuletide favorite A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Per formances will be at the Joan Hanes Theatre of the Stevens Center on December 22 at 8:15 and December 23 at 4:00 and 8:1? p.m. Ticket prices at $8 for adults and %1 for students and senior citizens. Doings thru Dec. 31 KISS ME KATE - Ken Koonce of Hoke County is currently starring in "Kiss Me Kate" playing at the Bordeaux Dinner Theatre in Fayetteville. He plays Fred Graham the ac tor/director of a show in rehearsal. The plot concerns the events surrounding the ac tors backstage as they prepare for the opening of the Shakespearean play "The Taming of the Shrew" as well as parts of the Shakespeare play onstage. Onstage Ken has the role of Petruchio the leading man who tames the shrewish Katherine. Ken has used his rich baritoine voice for leading roles in "Carnival', "Once Upon A Mattress", "Showboat" and "Damn Yankees" previously at the Bordeaux Dinner Theatre. He was also seen in two Hoke County shows as well as in "HMS Pinafore" and "Kismet" for Circa Produc tions. "Kiss Me Kate" will play at the Bordeaux Dinner Theatre each Wednesday through Sunday evening until New Year's Eve. A gourmet buffet dinner is served before the show. Call early for best seats at 323-1 1 14 any day from noon to 6 p.m. or check with the box office for the special New Year's Eve package plans. thru December 23 THE WINTER SHOW - The Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art in Greensboro will run the fourth annual "Winter Show" thru December 23. This unique ex hibition will feature 95 artists and craftspeople from across North Carolina. Between 500 to 600 original works of art will be on exhibit and for sale, to aid in holiday gift-giving or personal collecting. Green Hill is a non-profit gallery and educational facility exclusively featuring the visual arts of North Carolina. For more in formation call 919-373-4515. Jan. 4 ICE SKATING LESSONS - Cleland Ice Skating Rink, located on Reilly Road next to Lee Field House, will offer ice skating lessons beginning Jan. 4. These lessons are open to all military personnel (active-duty and retired) and family members as well as to civilian employees who hold the MSAD Card. The cost is $20 for six one-hour lessons. Jan. 29 FLEA MARKET - The next monthly Fort Bragg Flea Market, scheduled for Jan. 29; from I to 6 p.m., will be held at its outdoor location at the Fort Bragg Fairgrounds, located on Bragg Boulevard across from Stryker Golf Course. Spaces, approximately 8 feet by 10 feet, may be rented for a pre registered fee of $5. Spaces rented at the gate are S7. Registration may be made at the Youth Center on Reilly Road from 11:30 a.m. -5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. A set of rules will be available. NEW BROCHURES - Copies of the new City-County Brochure are hot off the press and available to anyone. Brochures can be picked up at the Raeford-Hoke Chamber of Commerce. SOCIAL SECURITY CHANGE -- Effective in December 1983, the visits of the Social Security represen tative have been changed to the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month rather than the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays. The represen tative meets the residents of Hoke County in the Civil Defense Building at the corner of Dickson and W. Donaldson Streets in Raeford from 10 a.m. until noon. There will be 'no visit on the 4th Monday, December 26, because it is a na tional holiday. ALCOHOL. DRUG TELE PHONE COUNSELING -- There will be a new Alcohol and Drug Counseling service available to the citizens of our county in the form of a toll free telephone number operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week . The service is funded by Sand hills Center and is designed as a means to provide another chan nel of contact for persons needing information and counseling for alcohol and drug problems. Jan. 10 SCHOOL OF MATH & SCIENCE INFO - John Poe, Admissions Representative, will conduct an information session on the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics's educational program and admissions pro cess at Hoke County High School in Raeford on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 12:30 p.m. Local school counseling offices will have information on the exact location. All students, parents and others who are interested in the school are invited to the meeting, particularly 10th grade students who must apply before Jan. 27, if they wish to attend the high school. There will be a time for questions and answers. NCSSM, located in Durham, is the nation's first public, residential, state-wide, coeducational, tuition free school for academically gifted I Ith and 12th graders who have high interest and potential in science and mathematics. The school opened in 1980 with 150 students. Enrollment is now 400 North Carolina students from 85 counties including Hoke. JOB TRAINING -? Applica tions are now being taken for the new Job Training Pro grams. The Nashville Con temporary Brass Quintet will present a special Children's Concert on January 28, at 2:00 p.m. The Easy Moving Dance Company will perform March 31, at 2:00 p.m. in the Perfor ming Arts Center. A morning workshop designed for the beginners in dance will be presented at 10:00 a.m. at 3:30 p.m. The RED BALLOON CHILDREN'S SERIES Season tickets are on sale now. Morale Support Activities Division's Arts and Crafts Center will be offering classes in quilting and basketry beginning in January - taught by Cindy Simms and Rosemarie Zanders respective ly. Quilting Classes are scheduled for Jan. 4-March 7. Two class times are available to choose from: Wednesdays from 10 a.m. -I p.m. or Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m. The Basketry Class is scheduled for Jan. 6-March 9. This class will be held on Fridays from 6-9 p.m. Registration fee for these classes is $20. Interested par ticipants should stop by the Arts and Crafts Center, located on Knox Street next to the Fort Bragg Playhouse to pay the registration fee and pick up a supply list prior to the first class. More than 1,300 listings are in cluded in the booklet which features a color photo of Asheville's Grove Park Inn and Country Club on the cover. Other photos included in the directory include Guilford Courthouse National Military Park in Greensboro, a beach scene and an autumn shot of Looking Glass Rock near Brevard. The 1984 directory in cludes 227 more listings than the previous directory. A special five-page section in the front of the 60-page booklet features the state's country inns and bed and breakfast establishments. Jan. 2 F.MT RF.FRKSHKR COURSE ? Beginning Jan. 2, 1984, an EMT refresher course will be offered to all emergency medical services personnel who must re-new certification in March. This course is being of fered through Sandhills Com munity College and will be con ducted at the Hoke County Rescue Squad building. A fee of $10.00 will be charged for those persons who have an EMT certificate that is near ex piration and who are not presently affiliated with emergency medical services, law enforcement, or fire department. The course will consist of 21-24 hours. All in terested persons should contact Cheryl Farmer at 875-2156; Ext. Citizens have until Jan. 15 to submit nominations for the Distinguished Women of North Carolina Awards to be presented in March 1984 Achievements will be con sidered in business, education, health, agriculture, govern ment, sports, arts, humanities, volunteer service and others. CRAFTS CONTEST - Morale Support Activities Division's Arts and Crafts Center will hold the Fort Bragg level of the Army Designer Crafts Contest in early February. The contest will have two groups -- Novice or Amateur - and Accomplish ed or Experienced. There will be si* categories for entries: ceramics, wood, metal, fibers/textiles, glass and leather. All of the entries must be *he design and work of ihe participant. All military (active-duty and retired) and family members, as well as civilian employees who hold the MSAD Card are eligible to enter at the Fort Bragg level. However, only active military entries will be forwarded to the FORSCOM and DA levels of competition. Cash awards of $25 for first place, $20 for se cond place, and $15 for third place will be given to the win ners in each category and group. Entry blanks are available at the Arts and Crafts Center. House of Raeford awarded During the "ladies \ight" supper for American l egion members ami their wives, 10th District Com mander George Jones of l.aurinburg awarded House of Raeford Personnel Director Todd McDonald with a plaque honoring the firm's efforts to hire veterans. \early 100 American Legion members and their guests were present during last Tuesday night's supper that featured video of the Veteran's Day Parade and Raeford in 1937.
