The new canvass boat was successfully launched, and it was a pleasure to observe the alacrity with which the various orders were executed. A crew took possession of the boat after it was launched and rowed around for some time, while the balance of the Division returned to the Armory and went through an Infantry drill. Our Reserves are "hot stuff." The LMt Nad BIMa Tho funeral services of Mrs. Sarah L. S. Manly, were hold at Christ Church last evening at six o'clock, and were conducted by the Rev. T. M. N. George. There was a quanlity of flowers rent by loving friends, who were in atten dance at the Church to assist in the last sad rites. Theresa Roberts left on the steamer Ncuse, last night, on her way to Philadelphia, which is to be her future horns. Misses Theresa and Eate Roberts, her daughters, will follow her to Phila delphia in a few weeks. April 29. i The movement of the State troops to go into camp hero will not begin until Monday, May 2nd. The camp has been selected and named in honor of General Bryan Grimes. Fifty men began this morning to prepare the ground for drill purposes, and to pitch tents and make other preparations for the encampment. Tiie North Carolina Slate Guard is volunteering slowly for the war with Spain only 13 of the 23 companies of the State Guard have volunteered for service. . This gives North Carolina only 1 regiment. North Carolina is requisi tioned for 2 regiments of Infantry and one battalion of heavy artillery. Tbo number of men required for each com pany is 85. Regular U. S. officers will muster in the men. There has been harsh criticism of those men who have "dropped out of . the State Guard here, but almost every one, 1 to a man, has come out in a card giving his reasons. "Honor thy Father and thy Mother" is a Divine command and in many cases "honoring" means to sup port, and with $14 per month with probably a sacrifice of life is but a poor fulfillment of a heavenly command. If nothing prevents Raleigh will be ail astir on Monday when the State troops begin to go Into camp here, according to orders. The "Governor's Guards" has its full quota of men, and a second com pany here is about formed by Capt. Fred Woolcott. The Democratic Convention for the 4th District is called to meet here on May 25th for the purpose of nominating a solicitor and the transaction Of other business. News of the death of Mrs. Matthias Manly, of New lierne, mother of lion. Clement Manly, Chuirman of the Demo cratic State Committee, was received hero yesterday with sorrow. The programme for tho N. C. State University commencement has been is sued. The Baccalaurate sermon will be preachodMay 29th by, Rev. Wither F. Tillott, D. D. o Vanderbilt University. The closing exercises will be June 1st. The school committee for Raleigh withdrawj its request to tho county commissioners for a special election for the 150,000 public fchool bonds. This being a campaign year, in addition to tho war excitement, it is deemed best to wait awhile until many llilnrs are more settled. The directors of the North Carolina Railroad met hero today to elect a treas urer for the road to succeed the lata Mr. E. 8. Walton. The salary Is $2,000 with a $6:;0 clerkship. There are many ap plicants for the position, chief among thorn being Adjutant General Cewles, Slate Senator, Sbarpe of Iredell. Col. J. F. Armlield of Statesvil'iO has been 'appointed Colonel of the First North Carolina Regiment of volunteers. Tonight the convention of the South ern Christian Church met here. There are many delegates from all over the South present. Frost was predicted for this moruiug but there was none. The first companies to go Into camp here will be the Governor's Guard, then tho Greenville, Charlotte and Shelby companies. Thcso aro from tho first reg iment. The second regiment will not go into camp, until 500 more tents for which, requisition has been made by the Quartermaster General, arc sent here. A largo military company has been formed at Durham. This takes the place of tho company that was there, but which has volunteered for war. lierj in Raleigh, and elsewhere the samo thing will be. done.
