' V ABSENCE. KLLA WHKKI.gR WTLOOX. Afte too went away our lovely room Seemed like a casket wkeaee the soul had fled I stood ia awful and appalling gloom. The world was empty and all joy was dead. I think I felt as one might feel who knew That death had left him on the earth alone, For "All the world" to my fond heart means you, And there is nothing left when you are gone. Each way I turned my aad, tear-blinded gaze I found fresh torture to augment my grief. Some new reminder of the perfect days We passed together beautiful as brief. There lay a pleasing book that we had read, And there your latest gift; and every where Some tender act, some loving word you said, Seemed to take form and mock at my despair. All happiness that human heart may know I And with you. And when you go away Those hours become a winding sheet of woe, And mako a ghastly phantom of to dsy. This is the certain penalty of joy The prioe we pay for being over glad. Who grasps the greatest rapture must destroy The lesser pleasure and in turn be sad. The Reward of Perseverance. The triumph of persistent effort was illustrated very forcibly the other day in Connecticut. For filteen years an invt'ntor of the name of Case has been ut work on a new kind of steam engine. He had the idea, but just bow to get it into practical shape, that was the difficulty, Model after model was made, one experiment succeeded another, and still the one thing lacking eluded him. Other small inventions were brought ont and served to tide the family through financial straits, but there was always a return to the one great object, oyer which Mr. Case studied an til at last, a few weeks ago, he conceived the iin provement which has crowned his long task with success. The invention is neither more nor les tbaii it miniature steam en gine with the power of a much lar ger one. Mr. Case, 00 1 of a few pieces of cast iroD. haB built a ten horse power engine tnat is bnt a foot and ft half ton gv and ''eight inches wide. It has been thor oughly tested, and unmistakably accomplishes all that is claimed lor it. A stock company, named after the inveutor, hfts beenjforiried, of wnicn Mr case fifeta fo.wu worth of shares, besides the $50,000 be receives in cash outright for his patents. It was while watching one of these fast trotters an animal which had the enormous stride of twenty-three feet that the million aire conceived the idea that in some part of his coarse the horse must entirely clear, the ground and have all four feet in the air.
