The Wilmington Messenger of the 4th mat. has u suggestive article on "American history must be rewritten." We do not propose tJ follow the line ot our esteemed contemporary. It is sufllcient of iaelf. All histories are more or les partial. It ' doubtful whether any mind is entirely unbiased. Ideas and opinions are always tore oi less influenced by environ ment. Let os trust that the time is approsching when a reliable and authentic American liistory can be produced. Nothing is more misleading than tbe recent war luntones that have been acattered broadcast over the country. The causes that led to secession ; the conduct of the Con federate government in the Cabi net and tbe field ; the formation aad equipment of armies: battles, victories, and defeats, are gross misrepresentations, designed to ag grandize tbe North anil humiliate tbe South. Bat all this accords with the his tory of the world. The victors are tbe dictators of history, until tbe atmosphere is cleared, and the son of truth illominss the past. Much that was recorded as history has been swept away by the inexorable logic of (acts. Once it was popular, in some quarters, to indulgs in tbe defamation of soldiers of North Carolina, but he who does in now writ himself an ignoramus or a tilliin. But the volume of American alatrtrT is not closed, and it is to the coming chapters that we wish to direct the attention of our coun trymen. The day will come in which America will stand before the world in ber collossal greatness; "the breath of heaven blessing her flag; the extremities of earth ac kUowIedging her name; her ports lite with the contributions of commerce, her fields waving with the fruits of agriculture and ber temples vocal with unrestricted piety. In this grand achievement, in thia sublime consummation, North Carolina will have a part commensurate with the genius and Tirtue of her sons. Confidently, exultsntly we salute the futurp Ths Pablisblar and Talent Unices of the Scientific Amerieai. Perhaps gome of onr readers hav c Tisitad the extensive offices of tbe Scientific American, at 361 Broad way. New York, but many have not, and to such tbe following ac count may be of interest. A cor respondent wbo recently had this nleajtnrt informs ns that he was I f really surprised at the magnitude oftfce establishment. It suggested to KU inind an enormous insurance : Ojiipany or banking boose. At Jtlf main office, which rs principally (daTOted to the patent busines tonfling as it does so important a parfcOf Jhe establishment may be Men tbe members of the firm and thelf We corps of examiners. ..JUadyi access to tbe principals is afftrMei-to every one; and here mijpl 'seen inventors from all "sajtt jbf the country showing their j ttidtU nd drawings, and explain JUi their, inventioBi. Tbe models 'lefabylarentortforaa large and i WereitlBg collection, and are kept in. room bj tbemseJrM. Tn of draughtsmen who prepare the patctt arawinp are tor the os. pari experiaaeed Bfcbaa ics, electricians, or engine!, aone oi then baring been connected with the I . aS. Patent Office. - Moat of the correepondeace is carried oa bj tjpa writers, aad thia necessitates a aeparate department, where, a nomber of experienced female tjpe writera and ateaoeraphera are ooo- atantij employed. The dark room, where tae pbotorraphs of the pates t drawing are copied, and where the photographs for the architectural department are de- reJoped, iaalaoen thia floor. On the floor abofa maj be loaad the editorial rooms, compositors' and sabacription room, and engravers' department. Tie Architectural Department occupies the top floor, aud here may be seen tbe manager ot this department, and also a number of draughtsmen at work preparing the plans and general designs for the Architect and Builder edition of the Scientific American, which is published monthly, and has at tained a widespread circulation. The printing of tbe papers is car ried on in a separate building. At the entrance of tbe main odice, which alone occupies a floor space of CO by JCo feet, may be seen one of Prof. Draper's remarkable rec ordine barometers, with which in . . - I - 1 ; I . I ottbe atmospheric changes. This barometer was bnilt specially for the Scientific American, and it is a remarkably one aud sensitive as well as a very executive insirii meet. Some ide v may be had of the ex ' tent of tbe business doue at the office of the Scientific Amenc;u when we state that over ooo hun i dred persons are employed by Mono Co. on their several publications ! and in their extensive patent de partments.
