LOCAL NEWS. Weather Fair till Saturday morning, Mr. and Mrs D. F. Wiloox. of Oolnm- tiue. Georgia, arrived last night to visit their daughter, Mr. R Bansom. The fair Ooaamitiee on Ladies' Work, Art Knitting and Crocheting held a very aatisfaotory meeting yesterday, making arrangements for th Fair. Tjday at 13 o'clock. Deputy U. 8. Marshall O. B. We are still desirous of getting mora names for the Fair edition of the JouB NAL. Good lists will be appreciated Placing the paper in the hands of your friends wilt please them and benefit the Fair. Tbe annual eleotion of offices of tbe Board of Trustees of New Berne Academy will take plaoe at the meeting this afternoon at four o'olook in tbe office cf the President. It is desirable that every member should be present. It is not an unusual thing now to get inquiries by mall from partiea who in tend to exhibit at or visit the Fair. Mrs. B. B. Davenport received such a letter y-strday from a party of New Jersey ladies who have been spending the winter in Notaway oounty. Va., who intend to be here at that time. Dr. Bagbj's Cotton Chopper and Cnlti. Tator Description - One Can be Seen at the Fair. Two or three weeks ago we told of Di G K. The patent baa not yet been uaued, but the in Teniioo Is proteoted by the application n1 0M ot the implements ill be on exhibition at the New Borne Fair Mre. Q. H Watar & Bon are now building it. Tne chopper not only thine oat tbe oottoa but piows it and U intended to do tbe work of ten hoe and twelve plow. Tbe ohopper run on two wheel. Extending from tide to (id at the rear it tbe whaeli ia a metal bar to wbiob ix hoe plaoed 2i inobe apart are at tached. Dr. Bagby will have photographs of the obopper taken, and after implement manufacturer have bad their attention attracted to them will decide upon arrangements for manufacturing and plaoing them on the market. DO Y0UB PART For tbe Fair- Bis Hogs -Premiums, etc. An Onslow oounty farmer who dropped in our cffioe to renew hia sub soription for the oomicg year told us the weight of four bOK which he has just killed. Une weighed 200 pounds. another 265, another 298 and the lar gest 633 pounds. Wouldn't that last fellow have been a daisy for tbe New Berne Fair? The ohsnoe at tbe pre mium he might have taken was worth tbe trouble of bringing him if he had been kept until then. Besides the regular premium of $5 for the largest hog on exhibition, to weigh hot less than 400 pounds, there is a speoial one of a barrel of fine flour, by Messrs. Roberts Bros.; also, half a dozen liberal regular premiums for thoroughbred hogs and if the owner oan't get "the whole hog" to the Fair let him still re member there are good premiums for hams, etc. Even if there were no premiums, tbe good to be eooompllihed by the Fair would still be furthered by the bringing of all the good stook possible I Our farmers gather information from seeing what another one has and learn ing how he is pleased with it and what meaenre of aucoes attends tbe raising of different varieties. He in turn should be willing to contribute what be oan to benefit some one else. Fair are to a large extent educational insti tutions and as eaoh individual feels an interest in making them accomplish the highest results to that extent will the Fair deserve and aohieve aucoess The Sting of a Monopoly. INFORMATION FROM THE FRUIT AND PRODUCE TRADE ASSO CIATION OF NEW YORK. Uniform Packages Necessary. To growers and Shippers of Fruit, Truck and Vegetables in the Atlan tic Coast States. We copy the following letter as a matter of information to those inter est d in fruit, vegetable and truck ana mink It a protection to them, and ttie sooner tbe plan is followed tbe belter it will be for those interested: Owing to tbe enormous increase in truck and fruit growing tbrougbout the Atlantio Coast States, it ha become more and more apparent eaoh year to tbe receivers ot the property here that package of uniform eiz are not omy needed bnt imperatively demanded. Che equaility of size 10 packages bao been anuoy ing and embarassiug to Com mission Merchants and a loss to ttbip pecs and Growers. The principal ad vantages of uniform packages are aa follow: First, the property could be handled hereiO decidedly hotter tdva-- lene Soound, small packages cost is mucb for Ireigbt aa tbe full size and sell for much less, proportionately, (be cause buyer are ao prt jjulced agsi. st tuemjvbereby makiug mem very un protUaole to the shipper. Third, differ ent sizes require different prices to correspond witn tbe paonaue. tbe quant) of the oontents being the same. fourth, we are threatened witn adverse irgisiatioo in consequence of tbe irrriiu laruj ot tbe package in ute. For these reasons we do not only recommend but, strenuously urge tbe immediate adoption as far as poesi Die of the round hooped flour barrel as the standard of measure, with the barrel crate equal in capacity to tbe standard barrel, rounded measure, ano the half-barrel orate end third-barrel orate to be proportionate parts of tht standard orate or barrel. Tbe retail grocers of tbe city buy re tail quantities of Fruit and Vegetables fby have a strong organization and for three yaars have been untirmit iu their ffort to induoe the Gomuooo Council of thia City to enact an ordin ance to compel the " sale of Fruit nl Vegetable by weight. The bill by tbe utmoat exertions of the Commission Merchants here was barely defeated last Winter and has reoently been i trod uced again in form as presented We have assured tbe Common Coun cil that the introduction of a standard paakage would plaoe the bueiners o selling f ruit and Vegetables upon a more equable basis and that it would obiefly meet tbe objections to tbe pres entsvstem upon wbich retailers base tbir demands for sales by weight. If the Growers will immediately take such steps as are necessary to abon-b irregular paokaK.es and rotroduoe tnose of standard siz aooording lo tht dimension given below, we are conn dent the bill oan be defeated. Our Assnoution inoludes among its members nearly all tbe principal re oeivers of Fruit and Vegetables in this city. Our Committee therefore repre sents tbe trade. We have most osre fullv considered this subject In sll its bearings We realize fully that an ordinance whioh would compel tbe sale of all Vegetables and most Fruits by weuh would be disastrous to your industry bv the Increased expense whioh It would necessitate ana tne unsvoiaaDie elavs wbiob it would cause We believe that our recommend tion will oommend tbemselve to yonr iu'ieement. We atoend tne dimensions or tne standard packages which we deem most desirable, and whieh have given the best results. Thev should be oloselv followed and the oaokagM so constructed that tney mav afford all Ithe ventilation neoessary nd display their oontents to tne best dvantage.
