HARPER, - - I Proprlotor. CT. HANCOCK, - Local Reperter. a IT was kind of the British lion to offer its much twisted tail as a bit of olive branch. THB French archbishops paplish letter stating that their country has become atheistic. THS Clearfield, Pa., miners tie mand higher wages. The demand is refused and the mines will be closed. A CALL has been ifsued by its chairman for a meeting of the Eepnblican State Executive com mittee. A DESPERATE fight occurs near vumDenana uap, Tenn.. between o ulcere. and outlaws. One ou each ride is killed. The cotton factory at Chester, S. 0., together with $80,000 worth of gingerham, was burned Tuesday; loss, 1220,000: Adelagation of colored men wait on the President and urge the appointment of W. D. Orum, col ored, as postmaster at Charleston, B.U. A Dispatch from Chili to the London Times says that the dispar icy Between the two nations was the cause of Chili's conciliatory terms to the United States. Skcbetabt Foster telegraphs to Capt. Evans of the Yorktown, now at Callao, to give his men shore leave, which means that the yessel will be there several days. The country will echo the ap plause which greeted Speaker Crisps appearance in the House and will welcome his resumption oi the duties of his position as an as surance of his restored health, which is all the more gratifying on public grounds on account of the grave questions whice now con front both branches of Congress. Mb. Bogeb Q. Mills is just the man who is going to surprise all of these politically wise men who persist in mappingout a course at variance with the policy of the Democracy. Mr. Mills wili be foumd, when he is needed, shoul der to shoulder with the other strong men of the party, and with ine "pull all together" which they will make, great results will be ac complished. Savannah News, Dem. PEACE ASSURED, t Although tba reply of Chili to the United States does not meet in ex. press terms the demands of this Government, its animus indicates willingness to go to the ultima thule ol the requirement. It cannot be doubted that the United States will meet Chili with the magnanimity characterise of true greatness and adjust the diffi culty in a way honorable to both nations. Indeed she should show that her benificence in peace is more conspicuous than has been her preparation for war. It is now evident that President Harrison sent in bis late message to Congress too soon, but Chili had long delayed and there was no rea son to expect an immediate change io her attitude. The people vill not hold him to a strict account for coming to a conclusion to which he was impelled by the lessons of experience and the dictates of patriotism. The war clouds dissipated, let us consider some of the lessons of late events. No sooner was it known that war was emanant than the national spirit was exhibited throughout the Union. The do'.ermination to de fend the flag and vindicate the uational honor, found expression in every State from Maine to Texas and from the Atlantio to the Pacifio While this does not prove tho com plete elimination of sectionalism, it shows tli at we are again a united people, proud of our common coun try and resolved to defend its honor and perpetuate its fame. The rapidity of preparation and the alacrity with which the men of every section of the Union volun teered showed the United States to be a military power of the first magnitude. Her standing army is relatively small, but volunteer organizations exist in every com munity that are ready at any mo ment to respond to the oall of the country. Much has been said of Minister Egan. He has been the subject of severe animadversion, but the President applauds him to the echo "There cannot be so much smoke without some fire." It will be hard to convince the public that the appointment of Mr. Egan was a wise one: His fidelity to his Government is most commendable, but he is wanting in the suaviter in modo so essential to the popular ity of public men. It seems that Mr. Egan offended the Chilli ans more by his personal bearing than by officials acts. We trust that a brighter future is before our sister republic of the South. May prosperous winds fill the sails of her commerce, and peace, plentiousness and prosperity be within her borders. Just Arrived : .' X .V.'.V'.-Vv; . V. J..
