The Lenoir County Board of Commissioners has adopted S 1968-69 budget of 62,931,404.09, permitting the $1.65 countywide tax rate to be continued for an other year. In the same act the board re*' tained the special 21-cent tax levy in the Kinston School Dis trict, which levy is expected to raise $139,650 on the estimated $66,500,000 tax listed valuation of the school district. T, The. estimated county tax list ed. valuation of $135,000,000 iis expected to yield $2,227,500 on the $1.65 tax rate. The remain der of the money needed to bring the budget in balance is tabulated under another head ing: ‘Comes In Here” on this page, and the allocations for each county service are also listed under a similar tabula tion headed: “Goes Out Here.” The countywide $1.65 tax rate allocates 88 cents of the levy for schools, 21 cents for welfare, 10 cents to the hospital fund, sev en cents to the health fund, four cents to the college fund, three cents, to the fire protec tion fund, 15.5 cents to the debt service fund and 16% cents to the general fund. This budget represents an in crease of $245,429.59 over last year’s $2,695,974.50 budget, and an increase of $25 million in the county’s tax listed valuation made possible keeping the tax rate at $1.65 in spite of the bud get increase. Insurance Kinston Council Monday Begins Long Job of Trimming Budgetary Requests Monday the Kinston City Council got a first look at what City Manager Jim Blue and city department heads thought th^'y would need, in, the way of fflon ey to run the city from July 1, 1969 through June 30,1969. Blue pointed out that he had trimmed about $60^,000 from the1 various departmental re quests before coming up with his final proposed budget of $4,494,163, which is $411,978 greater than the budget for fis cal 1967-68 which ended up at $4,082,185. * v The City must adopt its budget on or before July 28th, which means that the city council has a lot of work to do in the next three weeks, going through the bulky proposal, item by item and making such adjustments as it feels necessary in view of the city’s anticipated revenues and the willingness of, the public to absorb tax increases. To balance the budget tender ed Monday a total taj? increase of 27 cents on the $100 valua tion would be required, which would include the 10-cent levy approved by the voters last year for recreational purposes. The cduncil, along with the city manager and city clerk, and with the major department heads will go over the Budget between now and the 28th and see what can be donet if any thing, about holding the budget more early in line with existing tax rates and charges for city services.
