--—rr——: Captain James Pratt III Awarded Distinguished Flying Cross for Heroism in Vietnam on January 31st Army Captain James T. Pratt HI, whose parents live at 1411 Queen St., Kinston, received the Distinguished Flying Cross May 25 in Vietnam. Capt Pratt received the award for heroism in action which en gaged in aerial flight in connec tion with ground operations agaist a hostile force in Viet nam. * An instructor pilot assigned to the United States Army, Viet nam’s AH-IG New Equipment Training Team, he entered the Army in November 1962 and was last stationed at Ft. Rucker, Ala., before arriving in Vietnam last August. He also has re ceived the Bronze Star Medal and 17 awards of the Air Medal. The captain graduated from Grainger High School in 1953 and attended The Citadel, Charleston, S. C. His wife, Jeanne, lives at 613 Cameron Drive. The text of Captain Pratt’s citation reads: For heroism, while participat ing in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam: Captain Pratt distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 31 January 1968 as pilot of an attack helicopter supporting ground units during the com munist Lunar New Year offen sive in III Corps Tactical Zone. Enemy forces launched a series of coordinated attacks through out the country.. Captain Pratt's first call for assistance came from a unit pinned down in a village near his base. Quickly arming a helicopter damaged in previous missions that day, he flew to the battle site and di rected a devastating attack on the insurgents. He ignored with ering -enemy automatic weapons fire directed at his ship and made deadly rocket and machine gun strafing runs which inflict ed heavy casualties to the at tackers and forced them to with draw. After refueling and re arming his helicopter, he flew to help repel an attack on II Field Force Headquarters. His savage barrage on enemy posi tions enabled infantry forces to advance and destroy the Viet Cong. He was then called to aid a Vietnamese unit defending the Joint General Staff Headquart ers in Saigon. About 200 top boat racers from 6 or 7 states are expect ed since this race is a must for the national races. Last year this race was held in Miami, Florida. » The races will begin at 1 p.m. and will last approximately until 6:00 pm. Children under 12 are admitted free.
