Sides Independent Fundamental PremlMenia^ A Review "The Music Man" Although it was not a polished production, the Thursday, May 5, perform ance of Meredith Wilson's "The Music Man" produced by the Charles D. Owen High School Drama and Music De partments, was still worth the price of the ticket and the time to see the musical comedy. There were some flaws. The salesman on the train in the opening sequence that served at the play's prologue never quite caught the cadence that was supposed to suggest the sound and rythm of the wheels of the train. Their dialogue was difficult to understand at times. Hearing and understanding the dialogue was a problem at other times during the produc tion, too. The acoustics of the auditorium are obviously poor, but some lines were also delivered too hurriedly and the piano accompaniment drowned out the singers at times. Technical difficulties with the lighting were also noted. Lights didn't always come up or go down on cue. But despite these difficulties and the need for additional rehearsal time, the production provided pleasure and enter tainment for the enthusiastic audience. On the positive side of the ledger, the Barber Shop Quar tet sustained a high quality of performance. The voices of Dale Whittington, Steve Wil son, Ha! Bowiing and Mike Hoilifieid biended to produce meiiow richness that was a pieasure to hear. Scott Norton gave a strong performance based on good singing and the development of mannerisms that enriched his characterization of Pfof. Harold Hill. His use of the cane was particularly effec tive. Kern Geer was a convincing small town librarian who sang Marian's songs with an ap pealing sweetness suitable to someone who was waiting for her knight in shining armor. Virginia Gamer gave strength and support to the production in her role as Mrs. Paroo, Marian's practical mother. Her song with the quartet, was enjoyable. Barbara Chapin was notable as Ethel Toffelmier; she suc cessfully individualized her character. The pickalittle sequence was well staged and the use of the rocking chairs added much to that scene. The set was colorful and effectively used. Judy Sturgil and the mem bers of the Owen High School band added much to the production with the live over ture and music at intermis sion. The overall effect of the production was that with a iittie more rehearsal, the taient available couid have produced a more cohesive production. Ms. Boring should be com mended for her efforts. The community could benefit from seeing this play later this year when it could have more rehearsal time when the parti cipants weren't finishing a school year. Perhaps it could be one of the Sundays at the Lake?
