NEWBERN Staff Writer Enthusiastic ' is the only word to describe Helen Mahlum. On her recent trip from New Bern tq Hertford, she brought that enthusiasm with her and spread it around at a special meeting of the Hertford Business and Professional Women's Club. :-'v.:r'-' V.' She is the eastern area vice-president and when it comes to BPW, she knows her stuff. After all, she's been actively involved in the organization for 22 years and according to her, "it's been a real thrill and very rewarding." She said, "In the past year, I traveled 17,000 miles in the state of North Carolina selling BPW and it's been most rewar ding." w;,". Along with Ms. Mahlum, the club also welcomed another special guest, Edna Snell, BPW Director of District 10. Ms. Snell is also a very active member of the Edenton BPW. ; The reason for the special meeting was to spark new interest in the Hertford club by attempting to achieve a stronger active voice in the community. PricM Efftctiw Thru Sat, Inly 13, numerous worthwhile ac tivities, its members see a need for increased in volvement., During the - meeting, Hertford BPW President Hulda Wood' explained to Ms. Mahlum that the local club needs improvement in ; four main areas: en thusiasm, membership, programs and projects. , ; Although her talk mainly centered around increasing membership, Ms. Mahlum also covered BPW foun dation, legislationand gave the group ideas on achieving more successful money making projects and items to create interest at regular meetings. -.. ' The Hertford club is very interested in obtaining new members. Ms. Mahlum suggested that Hertford follow otljer N. C. clubs by inviting area businesses to sponsor a female, employee to represent that business at the club's regular meetings. She also pointed out that new young members can learn the basic groundwork of BPW from the present members as well as spark a new enthusiasm. The BPW consists of women 18 to 80 and membership is available to all women that are working. Each, year,Tthey award' a scholarship a deserving high school senior girl. Since its formation, the Perquimans .High School Health Careers Club has been sponsored by the BPW. The club also sponsors and directs the yearly can dystriper course. Presently, the club is involved in the U. S. 17 park project. The project's chairwoman Ann Young is a BPW member' and has received the club's backing. Year round, , the Hertford BPW operates the sick loan closet which has grown immensely under the leadership of Roxanna Jackson. And plans are in the making for a downtown beautification project. - With all these things keeping the 11 club num bers busy, they still want to do more. This proves that women have come a long way, baby. SHRIMPEROO The Elizabeth City Shrine dub will have a Shrimperoo on July 13 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Shrine Club. Price is $7 per couple.
