" y , Attorney General Robert Morgan siad Friday, "Within the last three months, North Carolinians have lost between $35,000 and $50,000 to flim Ham mers." Morgan said, "That's a conservative estimate. There's, really no fair estimate because many victims are , too em barrassed to rennrt a flim Mam." He added that numerous cases are handled by local law enforcement agencies and not reported to his office,; The Attorney General said about 10 cases are reported each month from com munities, throughout the state to the Organized Crime Control Division of the- State, Bureau of Investigation. Morgan said two schemes have been revived and are being often used. They are the "phony bank examiner"v and the "pigeon drop". : The "bank examiner" flim flam works like this.. A person posing as a bank examiner convinces the victim, usually elderly, to withdraw savings to "help catch" a bank employee suspected of embezzling funds. While the "catch." engages the victim (the "pigeon") in conversation, a second person (the "con") runs up exclaiming that he has found an envelope full of ' money and he doesn't know what to do with it. v DOUG'S AUTO & 5 Mile North ' US. 17, Rt 3 Elizabeth City DOUG PRTTCHARD Owner . CALL 3357059 A Short Vacation A 500-mile motor trip around the Chesapeake Bay takes motoring vacationists to many of the places where American history has been' written since 1607 when John Smith ', and his followers sailed up the Bay to establish the first English-speaking colony in the New World. The Circle Tour, which is more oval-shaped , than round, follows highways and byways that girdle the Bay from Norfolk, Va., at the ocean's edge, to Annapolis, many miles inland. Because it is a circle, the Tour can begin at any point along the 500-mile route. One suggested starting point is Salisbury, Md., ap proximately 100 miles from the Delaware Memorial Bridge, hear Wilmington, Del. Salisbury, on U. S. Other times of the year the ponies and other animals and wildlife can be seen at the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge, which is part of the Assateague Island National Seashore. Return to U. S. 13 and continue to (19 mi) Accomac. Among the buildings to be seen here are the Debtor's prison, St. James Church (1838) and Makemie Presbyterian Church (1838). Continue on U. It has been designated as' one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Continue on the Bridge-Tunnel to (14 mi) Sea SGull Island. This man-made island, one of four in the Bridge-Tunnel crossing, has a 625-foot pier where free fishing is available, a restaurant, snack bar and gift shop, and a lookout point for ship watchers.
