From the Jaycees, these went to Bill Cox and the Town of Hert ford ; Ray Ward, Area Director for the North Carolina Jaycees; the Perquimans ; Weekly; Tommy Privott, disc jockey with radio station WCDJ in Edenton; - and to the Perquimans County Jaycettes. Also outgoing Pres. White gave a certificate of ap-' preciation to each of the 1975-76 officers that served with him during the year. Area Director Ward presented certifications to Jaycees Kenny Stallings and Welly White and the Perquimans County Jaycee club. Ward also presented a ' plaque to Ed Brown, local and area winner in the professional division of Speak Up competition. , Key Man I awards were presented to those Jaycees members who have been in the club one .year or less and met certain requirements. In his remarks, he complimented the local club for an out standing year and urged members to continue to work to improve the local community. Representing the local school system will be Bill Tice, principal of Hertford Grammar School', Ms. Naomi Spence, primary teacher at Hertford Gram mar; and Pat Harrell, assis tant superintendent. The focus of the con ference is to explore and possibly outline steps that can be taken with local school units, institutions of higher education (specifically Elizabeth City State University and East Carolina University), and Don Juan News By MAUDE M.WHITE We want to congratulate Carolyn Harrell for being the winner of the "Make It Happen" trophy last week. It is hoped that this will be the first of, many sessions to discuss' things of mutual interest to all of the agencies involved. Items to be discussed will in clude an attempt to gain a better understanding of the preliminary undergraduate programs in reading at the universities. And the schools will explain to the university personnel what is expected in the line of competencies from these graduates. In . this manner, both qroups hope to gain a better understanding of how their programs effect the others and how both can work closer to effectively teach reading. Julian Phelps from Wind sor, N.C. was the Saturday night guest of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest White and family. , ; Mrs. Dorothy Perry visited her father, Willie Bunch, on Monday night. E.D.
