Page eB-MIRROR HERALD-Thursday, April tl, 1971 Yeoman Completes Course Navy Yeoman Second Claes Donald B. Beck, whose wUe ChiistelUa Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Dulon of 901 B. Kings St., Kings Mountain, has completed the Basic Enlisted Course at the Naval Submarine School, Oorton, Conn. During the six-week course, he was Introduced to the basic theory, con struction and operation of nuclear-powered and diesel submarines. In preparatton for his first assignment, he studied shipboard organization, damage control, and submarine safety and escape procedures. Beck joined the Navy In May 1068. Briggs Named To Post . BOIUNG SPRINGS - William J. Briggs, coor dinator of development, alumni, and deferred giving at Gardner-Webb CoUege, has been named director of career planning and placement, effective July 1. Gardner-Webb President Craven Williams announced the creation of the new office designed to assist students In making vocational decisions, and In finding employment opportunities. "In an economy where employment opportunities are limited, particularly for liberal arts graduates. It Is Imperative that the college concentrate as much effort on post cidlege career counseling as It does on charting a high school senior's career through college,” he stated. "In this new post Mr. Briggs will not only be working with current students, but also with alumni who are seeking to make career changes.” In preparing graduates for the world of work, the career planning proced\ire will begin during the students’ freshman year and be a part of the four- year educational pattern. Students will be given career-oriented teats and have opportunities to participate In various Internships programs, all designed to help the student determine his most appropriate career field. Coordinator of Gardner- Webb's development programs for the past two years, Briggs has been a member of the college administration since 1071 when he was named coordinator of student personnel services and director of student fin ancial aid. Briggs spent five years as dean of students and associate professor of education at Pfeiffer College. Prior to that, he was a teacher, coach and assistant principal in the Gaston County Public School System. A native of Llncolnton, he received the B. S. In Health and Physical Education from Pfeiffer College and the M. A. In education from Western Carolina University. He Is currently enrolled In doctoral studies through Nova University.
