CENTRAL SCHOOL MUSIC STUDENTS PRACTICE ‘FROM BROADWAY TO HOLLYWOOD” Briggs Leaving College Dr. Briggs, Williar 13th. president eof" Limestone College, has sub- mitted his resignation effec- tive June 30, according to J. Kenneth Hill, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Briggs submitted a letter of resignation to the Executive Committee of the Board dur- ing a meeting Thursday even- ing. He stated that he will become the Southern Sales Manager for Fidelity and Associates of Gastonia, effec- tive July 1. “Dr. Briggs worked very hard for many years for the improvement of Limestone College,”’ Hill said in a prepared statement. ‘‘We wish him well as he enters his new field of work. However, Limestone College will con- tinue its aggressive persuit of a quality educational pro- gram.” Formerly of Kings Moun- tain, Briggs, 49, has been president of the Gaffney- based school since September 12, 1979. Prior to his accepting the presidency, he worked as the Ad- ministrative Head and Direc- tor of Development at Limestone since July 1977. Regarded as a successful ... fundraiser, Briggs, as Direc tot of Development and later: as president, helped secure funds totaling over $4 million, has decreased the debt by over $500,000 and has increas- ed endowments by approx- imately the same figure. Academically speaking, Dr. Briggs initiated in the Fall of 1982, an Honors Pro- ‘gram providing gifted students a challenging course of study which encouraged genuine critical thinking and cultivated originalities and personal development. He also inaugurated, in February 1982, a Computer Science Program and was in- strumental in securing a Title III grant of almost $400,000 to purchase a computer and to provide necessary support staff for the implementation of this program in the Col- lege’s curriculum. However, new challenging opportunities await me in the business world.” Since Briggs has been at the helm of the College, he organized in 1979, a College Planning and Priority Coun- cil which outlined an Internal Case Statement for the Limestone College Develop- ment Program for the Decade of the Eighties and monitored strategic planning for the College. In 1980, he organized a Partnership Committee for the evaluation of planning of a unique, nationally acclaim- ed, partnership between the Cherokee County Family YMCA and Limestone Col- lege. In the Spring of the following year, Dr. Briggs organized and implemented the Decade of Confidence Capital Gifts Campaign, thus raising over $2 million to im- plement plans for the Part- nership Committee adding eight new tennis courts, two softball fields, running track, auxiliary gym, health center, and parking area to be used - jointly by the Cherokee Family YMCA and Limestone College. Additionally, Dr. Briggs supported and worked toward: the’ expansion of the Limestone Management Pro- gram for adult learners in a three state area. He worked toward making Limestone’s music program one of the finest of any private four- year college in South Carolina. In the community, Dr. Briggs was instrumental in restoring goodwill’ between the College and its surroun- ding area. Prior to his joining Limestone, Briggs had serv- ed as the Director of Develop- ment at Gardner-Webb Col- lege from 1975-77 and was the coordinator of Student Per- sonnel Services and Director of Student Financial Aid at Gardner-Webb from 1971-74. He 'had been Dean of Students and Associate Pro- fessor of Education at Pfeif- fer College from 1966-71. He is married to the former Joyce Jenkins and they have two children and one grand- ‘son.
