The new technique uses tiny incisions and all of the work is donc by the surgeon via endoscopy while view- ing a video monitor. Dr. Stephen Barrett and Dr. Stephen Day, both of Houston, TX, arc credited with the of the new technique. Mauncy says there are obviously many advantages for the patient. The endoscopic procedure can be comfortably donc under a local ancsthetic and allows immediate weight-bearing for the patient. Most patients return to a regular shoc on the third day after surgery. Most patients require lite if any pain medication. Many patients missed very little time from work if any at all. It is not uncommon in traditional heel spur surgery for pa- tients to be completely non-weight bearing for two to cight weeks af- -ter the surgery. Mauncy says the surgeon is able to sce the anatomy better endo- scopically than with the traditional type of surgery and the procedure takes less time to perform than with the old technique.
