XA) Page 2B Briefs THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD LEC staff members attend conference "Alzheimer's Care: Giving the Best and Getting the Best" was the theme of a statewide Alzheimer's Association confer- ence which was attended re- cently in Greensboro by two staff members of the Life Enrichment Center, an adult day service on Fallston Road in Shelby. Program Coordinator Joy Low and Program Assistant Leslie Spangler learned more ef- fective ways of treating adults with a variety of physical and mental disabilities. The not-for-profit Life Enrichment Center provides health care, personal care and socialization for any adult who cannot stay at home during the day. Participants in the service arrive as early as 5:30 a.m. in or- der for family members to go t to work, run errands or rest with the assurance that their loved one is in a safe, caring en- vironment. Participants may stay until 6 p.m. when they go home to spend the night. For more information about the center or Alzheimer's, call 484-0405. Local debutantes honored at dance Kings ‘Mountain debutantes Kathryn Morrow and Jacquelyn Houston were among the 15 debs from the Hickory and Burlington areas honored re- cently at a party and disco dance at Catawba Springs Golf Club of Lake Hickory Country Club. Morrow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Morrow, was escort- ed by Davis Jennings. Houston, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Martin Stallings, was escorted by Brian King. Parents of debs hosted the event which was on the theme, "Friday Night Fever." Local NC State University student Mark Pons was disc jockey and all 54 debutantes and their dates were invited to attend in 70's attire, polyester preferred. The evening was a flash back to the John Travolta disco era with a black and white dance floor, ac- cents of chrome and bright col- ors and record labels from the past. The young women were pre- sented to society at the June 14 Debutante Hall sponsored by the Shelby Junior Charity League. Numerous social events are planned to honor the debs. Saturday yard sale to benefit youngster A benefit yard sale for cancer patient Stephen Effler was ‘rained out last Saturday and has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 21 from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. at 309 West Gold Street, Kings Mountain. Stephen, 14, was diagnosed with leptomeningeal lymphoma in April 1996. He is scheduled to undergo massive chemother- apy treatments at Duke University Medical Center this summer. The treatments call for the removal of Effler's bone - marrow, the administration of the chemotherapy and the re- " placement of the bone marrow. Proceeds from the yard sale will be used by his parents for transportation and to pay $15 a day board at Ronald McDonald House in Durham. Donations to the Effler family may be mailed to Patricia Webb, 309 West Gold Street, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. Crystal River concert at Northside Baptist Crystal River will be in con- cert June 21 at 6 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church, 101 Benfield Road, Kings Mountain. ESSAY PARTICIPANTS - The Grover School students pictured above participated in the D.A.R. essay contest. The winner was Kristen Ammay. Students (not in order) are Kristen Ammay, Brenn Kates, Tiffany Williams, Emily Borders, Chad Watson, Ashley Williams, Roger Bailes, Derek Hilley, Baria Adams, Personnel Services to provide recruiting Personnel Services Unlimited, Inc. (PSU), a personnel place- ment company with 15 years experience, has announced the formation of a new recruiting services group. This group will focus on permanent placement. Charlie Benton, a personnel consultant with extensive place- ment experience, has been hired to head the new group. Expansion was prompted by market demand. Tim Blackwell, PSU Vice President, said, "We view this expansion as a blend- ing of our services so that our clients can call us to fill all of their employment needs, from clerical to high level manage- ment positions." Medical symposium set June 21 in Lenoir The Scleroderma Support Group of Caldwell County will host a medical symposium Sat., June 21 at 1 p.. at the Caldwell Country Library, 120 Fiosplinl Ave., Lenoir. The purpose of the sympo- sium is to educate the medical community about the devastat- ing effects of scleroderma, lu- pus, and other mixed connec- tive tissue diseases, as well as demonstrate its prevalence in the area. Dr. David Burack will provide the latest information on the disease to both the medi- cal professionals and its victims.
