{ ; | | | | | | ROTARY SPEAKER-Wehb Hubbell, who writes, speaks, and advocates publicly on social issues spoke to the Kings Mountain Rotary Club Nov. 20. Hubbell, who lives in Char- lotte, is a nationally recognized author and popular lecturer on the US criminal justice system, ethics and accountability, politics and government, life lessons from sports, and the miracle of organ transplants. He practiced law in Arkansas with Hillary Clinton, and was appointed by Pres. Clinton as Associate Attorney General. His first legal thriller, When Men Betray, was published in May. With Hubbell is Ronnie Franks. The Kings Mountain Herald | www.kmherald.com Jordan Caroline Owens Owens named 2014 freshman Homecoming representative at Wingate Jordan Caroline Owens had the distinguished honor of being named the 2014 freshman class Homecom- ing representative at Win- gate University. Jordan is the daughter of Chris and Tonya Owens and the granddaughter of Dub and Carolyn Blalock and the late Helen Owens. A graduate of Kings Mountain High School, she is majoring in Elementary Education at Wingate. Jordan has a younger sis- ter, Sydney. Miss Merry Christmas pageant set December 4 The Miss Gastonia Scholarship Association will sponsor the Miss Merry Christmas Pageant on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Cherryville Commu- nity Building, 106 South Jacob Street, Cherryville. The pageant is an offi- cial event of the Cherryville Chamber of Commerce's “Christmas on Main Street” activities, which take place from 5-9 p.m. in the down- town area. Girls age 0-19 years from Ga ston, Cleveland, Lincoln and surrounding counties may enter the pag- eant. Contestants wear a holiday dress or outfit and everyone receives a tiara. Open Gate Garden club meets The Open Gate Garden Club met November 12 at Boyce Memorial ARP Church for a program on use of herbs by Mrs. Flora Gwynette. Seven members were present. Jessie Collins, hostess, served delicious re- freshments. President Lenora Morris presided. Members made plans to attend the 100th birthday celebration of member Louise Roberts on Dec. 14 at Kings Moun- tain Baptist Church. Pkg. broccoli spears Y t. lemon juice SAUCE 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1 t. curry powder TOPPING Y% cup shredded cheese Ys cup bread crumbs mixed in 1 tbs. melted butter Simmer chicken in salt water until done. Debone. Cook broccoli according to package directions. Line casserole with butter. Put in broccoli (drained). Add chicken. Pour sauce over. Top with cheese and bread crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Serves 4. gie Bridges volunteered to check with the city on the club's plans to do plant- ings in the back parking lot downtown. Gwynette said herbs are used in many recipes and seasonings for pork, turkey, other meats and vegetables. Some of the favorite herbs for recipes are parsley, cilantro, sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, mint, and pep- permint. She brought a bou- quet of herbs for members to smell and taste and held Drop by Christmas Collections a drawing and Jessie Collins won the herb bouquet. Gwynette noted that some herbs are used for me- dicinal purposes. But if you use herbs for this reason you should use with caution be- cause many herbs are used as medicine. Southern Arts Society calendars for Christmas The 30th edition of the hand printed silk-screened calendars by Southern Arts Society artists is off the presses and entitled, “SASI Doodles.” Calendars are available to the public for $20 and frames are also available. Southern Arts Society members have been de- signing and printing these limited edition calendars since 1985. Their annual open house Sunday after- noon kicked off the holiday shopping season and those attending viewed a variety of fine art, photography, jewelry, woodwork, wear- able art and pottery avail- able for sale in their Art for Christmas Gift Shop. The entire Depot is filled with fine arts and handmade crafts. There is no admission charge to the art center in the beautifully renovated Depot at 301 N. Piedmont Avenue. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Satur- day from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and special Sunday hours through Dec. 21 from 1-4 p.m. Town and Country Garden Club meets The Town and Country Garden Club met on Thurs- day, Nov. 13 with Sarah Rhea as hostess at her Lake Montonia home. The Club Collect was read by the 11 members to open the meeting. A delicious meal of chicken pastry puffs, dev- iled eggs, salad, and pump- kin pie was served by the hostess. Cliff Laurich, guest speaker, presented inter- esting facts that he had gleaned from “The Drunken Botanist," the book by Amy Stewart. The author has an infectious enthusiasm for the plants, their uses, their history and the botanists who roamed the earth find- fe) Pap) I dL y Br 2 4¢ ing them. In the study of yeast, it is surmised that it is every- where. Beer was acciden- tally made in a bucket with yeast. Clove is a closed flower from a large beautiful tree. Stems are usually bought but the clove is still used in dental practices as an anes- thetic. Gentian, the yellow flowering type, can be used in cooking, salad dressings, pies, and also to flavor hun- dreds of drinks. Maiden Hair fern stem is used to flavor syrup. Nutmeg and mace grow in 40 foot trees like an apri- cot. Nutmeg is the nut of the fruit and mace is coating the nut. Vanilla orchids grow to 100 feet up in trees. Bees pollinate the flowers over two months, then fermen- tation releases the flavor. Pepper is actually chilli from America but called pepper by Columbus as the dried fruit he was given re- sembled peppers from India. Spaniards called the sweet form pimento. Florrie Hamrick pre- sided over the business of the meeting which included a discussion of future pro- grams. Susan Gibson pre- sented the treasurer's report.
