The Lady Mountaineers’ varsity volleyball team hosted a multi-team scrim- mage Saturday at Donald L. Parker Gymnasium and will travel to North Hender- son this coming Saturday for a multi-team varsity/JV scrimmage. Coach Ashley Walker’s girls. are in a rebuilding mode but still hope through hard work to compete for another SMAC champion- ship. Kings Mountain vol- leyball teams have won back-to-back SMAC titles and have won their confer- ence championship three of the past four years. The Lady Mountaineers have won 19 conference cham- pionships and two state crowns since 1985. They begin defense of their SMAC championship Monday, Aug. 17 at home against East Rutherford’s Lady Cavaliers. JV action begins at 4:30, followed by the varsity. They play their first Cleveland County game on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at Burns. Coach Rick Henderson’s tennis team is also in a re- building year but they have a lot of talented freshmen coming up, including Na- talie Lutz, who is one of the state’s top junior players as well as numerous players that helped Kings Mountain Middle School win the Tri- County Conference champi- onship last season. The Lady Mountaineers open their season Monday, Aug. 17 with a non-confer- ence contest at Lincolnton. They begin SMAC action on Thursday, Aug. 20 at Burns. The Mountaineers began heavy hitting last Friday. They’ve enjoyed going against each other in po- sition and game situation drills, and they’ve bene- fitted from some cooler. weather. The varsity has a 57- man roster which includes a senior class of 24. Many of those will be starting for their second or third season; and the 23-man junior class has some players that have started since their freshmen year. The team will hold its Black/Gold scrimmage Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Shu Carlton Stadium. The team will travel by bus from KMHS to the stadium. Fans are encouraged to greet them outside the stadium as they make their way down the bank to the playing field. This is a switch from years past when the buses dropped players off at Cen- tral School for a walk down Gaston Street. All of the varsity and some JV players will be worked into the scrimmage at some point, according to Coach Greg Lloyd. He said the scrimmage will last about an hour and a half. tice Saturday morning. The Mountain- eers’ opponent is mountain power Asheville, which has 14 starters returning from a team that went 12-2 and three rounds in the state 3A playoffs last year. A good showing against the Cougars should mean a good season in store for the Mountaineers. . Asheville has several highly-recruited players, both on the line and in the backfield, and the Cougars are projected to go undefeated in the Western Athletic Conference for the second year in a row. Kings Mountain has 25 lettermen and 14 start- ers returning from last year’s team that finished third in the SMAC behind state champions Crest and Shelby. The Mountaineers were 8-4 overall.
