Pag* 4B-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thiif»day. »j.tU 23. 1981 Dr. Taylor T. Receive Abbey Honorary Degree Belmont Abbey College will award Dr. J. Randolph Taylor, pastor of Myers Park Presbyterian Church of Charlotte, the honorary Degree of Laws degree. The presenta tion will be made during the 1981 commencement ceremony at Belmont Abbey College. Cleveland County Boys Club Staff and a couple of the clubs members point to the goal of their annual auction of $15,000.00. The auction will be held at the club on lune 20. Left to right. Taylor began his career as a minister in 1956 as pastor of The Church of the Pilgrims, Washington, D.C. In 1968 he became pastor of Central Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, Ga., where he served until his move to Charlotte in 1976. In Charlotte he serves as chairman of the Charlotte Area Clergy Association, commis sioner of the Housing Authority of the City of Charlotte, and vice chairman of the C'harlotte- Mccklenburg Community Rela tions Committee. He is a member of the Advisory Council to the Governor’s Office of Citizen Affairs as well as the Nvtrth Carolina Advisory Com mittee to the United States Com mission on Civil Rights. He is chairman of the General Assembly Committee on Presbyterian Union and of the Commission on Christian Unity, North Carolina Council of Chur ches. He serves on the executive board of the North Carolina Council of Churches. In 1970 he was a representative to the W'orld Alliance of Reformed Churches in Nairobi, Kenya. Taylor holds the bachelor of Arts degree from Davidson Col lege, the bachelor of divinity from Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Va., and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Aberdeen, Aber deen, Scotland. In 1974 he was awarded the doctor of divinity degree from Oglethorpe Univer sity, Atlanta, Ga. His continued commitment to higher education is evidenced by his service on the Board of Trustees of Agnes Scott College, Decatur, Ga.; Davidson College. Davidson, N.C.; John C. Smith Setninary, Interdenominat ional rheological Center, Atlanta, St. Andrews College, Laurin- Ga.; and Presbyterian burg, N.C. Born in Taichow, Kiangsu Province, China, Taylor is the son of Presbyterian missionaries. Dr. and Mrs. H. Kerr Taylor. He attd his wife, the former Arlitte Johnson, have six children. laylor will receive his honorary doctorate from Bel- motit Abbey College at the J p.m. graduation exercises oti May 10 in the Wheeler Center. One hundred forty-three graduates of the College will receive the bachelor’s degree at this time. ( 0 Drive Begins ■Approximately 50 people gathered today at the Cleveland County Boys Club for a lun cheon to kick off the events iti preparation of their fourth an nual super auction. Chairmatt of the super auction IV, Tony Jr., told those in attendance tha. last years super auction III had surpassed its goal by raising more than $15,000.00 and that the goal for super auction IV had been set at $15,000.00. Auction co-chairmen Glenn Williams and Dan Moore told the board members present that there would once again be an organized effort to canvas all ol Cleveland County for the pur pose of soliciting donations of new and used merchandise as well as cash. They also invited the general public to donate gtxxl useable items to the auc tion. They said that anyone wishing to donate auction items could either bring them by the boys club at 412 West Sumter Street, or phone the boys club at 482-3258 and the items would be picked up at the dotiers home or place of business. .Auctioneers Bob Melton, A1 Holland, Ken Humphries, Roy Dedmon, Ben Poston and Joe Stockton have once again volunteered their services for this years super auction IV. A mini-auction was held to whet the appetites of those present for super auction IV and several in teresting items were auctioned at the luncheon. Officials from the Shelby City Government and the Cleveland County Commissioners were on hand and it was stated that both groups plan to prtx'laim Satur day, June 20th as Super Satur day. Before the meeting adjourned Izzi, again stated that there is a tremendous need for good useable auction items and cash donations so that the goal of $15,(X)0.00 may be reached. Award Slated The Shelby Exchange Club is now receiving nominations for the 1981 Book of Golden Deeds Award. The Book of Golden Deeds Award is presented each year honoring a person from the Cleveland County Community for outstanding Voluntary Com munity Service. The recipient’s picture and summary of service is placed in the “Book of Golden Deeds”, which remains on display in the Cleveland Memorial Library. To nominate someone, send a letter listing his or her voluntary services benefiting the community to: Shelby Exchange Club, Book of Golden Deeds Award, P.O. Box 1954, Shelby, N.C. 28150. Nominations must be received by May 15. Butterflies Final Play “Butterfiies Are Free” will be the final production of the 1980-81 season for the Abbey- Players of Belmont Abbey Col lege. The play will be given April 24-27 at 8fl0 each evening in the Haid Theatre on campus. The show’s four-member cast will be under the direction of Tom Kaiser, a senior English major from Durham, N.C. Joan Gutshall of Pompano Beach, Fla., will be the stage manager. The all-student cast includes Joan Heron of Dover, Del., Mary Walsh of Lilburn, Ga., Christopher Ceponis of Somer ville, N.J., and Mike Farmer of Gastonia. The play is open to the public.
