ECSU In Independent Extension CHAPEL HILL - Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) hai become the seventh member of the University of North Carolina system to )oin the Independent Study by Extension consortium. ECSU Joins Appalachian State University. East Carolina University, N. C. State University. UNC-Aiheville, UNC Chapel Hill and UNC- Greensboro in the inter* institutional program for correspondence instruction. Established in 1801 as a normal school for leaching black common school instructors. ECSU currently enrolls 1,800 students. Chancellor Marion D. Thorpe says the institution is planni^ to extend its academic programs throughout northeastern North Carolina and eventually become a regional university center, complete with graduate programs. Dr. Louts V. Nadeau, assistant academic dean for special |Ht)grams at ECSU, will be the representative to the Independent Study Advisory Committee, which includes members fnun each institution within the Independent Study consortium. Future plans Incluue cross-lilting courses originating at ECSU and other consortium institutions and the development of new courses.
