Net profits up 50%. Coaching was a wise investment.” Seventy Years of Temple Beth El (Continued from page 1) Left: the original groundbreaking for Temple Beth E Ion Prov- ■ idence Rd.; right, the more recent groundbreaking for the ex pansion in Shalom Park. well as the growth of our religious sehool, adult edueation, and inter faith outreaeh programs. TBE members have also faeed some painful moments, many re lated to the eivil rights movement. On November 11, 1957, an at tempted bombing of TBE oe- eurred, the first in a series of attaeks on Jewish institutions in the South by a white separatist or ganization. This eame on the heels of hooded Klansmen protests on September 1, 1957 when eongre- gant Robert Sehrader’s Visulite Theater on Elizabeth Avenue bravely showed Island in the Sun, a movie depieting interraeial ro- manee. And both events were pre- eeded by the April 1957 Time Magazine report on Harry Golden’s “Vertieal Negro Plan” for integration as a response to the North Carolina legislature’s ef forts to preserve segregation. Golden’s satirieal essay advoeated removing ehairs from publie sehool elassrooms sinee Southern whites didn’t seem to mind stand ing with blaeks on bank and gro- eery store lines, only sitting with them. In 1970, the eongregation di vided over the direetion of Re form Judaism, and twenty-seven families formed the new reform eongregation Beth Shalom. The split would last 16 years until the eongregations merged in 1986 under the leadership of our first woman president Sally Sehrader. In January 1971, the funeral serv- iee held for TBEs beloved eusto- dian Clarenee Thaeker, an Afriean Ameriean, was the subjeet of a Charlotte Observer editorial. Not ing that the attendees were “blaek and white, Jew and Gentile, young and old,” the newspaper eneouraged its readers to over- eome the “old barriers” that had prevented Charlotte from beeom- ing a real eommunity by holding “to the spirit that lived the first day of the year at Temple Beth El.” TBE’s attention to edueation, worship, soeial justiee, elergy, leadership, and eommunity im bues all seven banners. Through out 2013, several weekend eelebrations highlight these im portant areas. In February, we fea tured “Lifelong Learning” led by former Assoeiate Rabbis Mieah Streiffer and Jeremy Barras. May eelebrates Soeial Justiee and Car ing Weekend with a panel of ex perts on medieal and spiritual healing, as well as TBE’s annual “Mitzvah Day” of eommunity serviee. November’s Leadership Weekend will honor our past pres idents and other eongregants, as we also weleome URJ President Rabbi Riek Jaeobs. Moving forward “from strength to strength” as we eele- brate our 70th birthday. Temple Beth El eontinues to thrive as a Beit Knesset (House of Assem bly), a Beit Midrash (House of Study), and a Beit T’filah (House of Prayer).
