Page 8, West Craven Highlights, May 31,19B4 FARMING Farmers Market Opens June 2 Graham to speak at Farmers Market Opening: Saturday morning June 2 at 6 a.m. is the time scheduled for ' Craven County’s Farmer’s Market to open for business. At 10 a.m. the public will hear from the Honorable Jim Graham, N.C. Secretary of Agriculture give the opening address. It will be a big affair and worth attending according to Billy Dunham, Craven County Extention Agent. There will be free hot dogs, pony rides, and a band will be present to furnish entertainment. As a part of the opening the Extension Homemakers will give demonstrations in food and jelly preparations during the opening day. George Dimick, local Farmer’s Market Representa tive, says, “Get up a carload or truckload and come on down to the Grand Opening of Craven County’s Farmer’s Market.” The rules and regulations for the Farmers Market are: The purpose of the Farmers Market is to provide a location for producers and/or sellers of farm products to sell their products and to provide a location for consumers and retailers to purchase direct from producers of fresh fruits, vegretable and other farm products for their own use or for resale. 1) The market or any of its employees shall not be responsible for loss through theft or otherwise of private property at the market. The market will not be responsible for personal injuries or damages to individual or personal property. 2) The market manager or his agent shall have the supervision and general control of the Farmers Market area. 3) The market manager or his agent will collect all fees, . issue selling permits, and assign selling space to each seller. 4) No person may sell or offer to sell any produce or products until he or she has first paid the required fee and secured a selling permit and parked the vehicle on the market in the assigned space as directed by the market manager. Once a space is rented, it belongs to that purchaser until vacated. 6) Any user of space on the market must keep the space clean, sanitary and orderly from premises at the time the site is vacated. 6) No prepared or cooked foods, baked or out-of-pot, will be allowed to be sold by the participants and no seafood or meats will be sold, except those seafoods and meats which meet Health Department rules and regulations and must have the approval of local Health Officials and NCDA Food and Drug Protection Division. 7) Scales or units of measure must be approved types or those which would pass City, County, State or Federal inspection and approved by the Market Manager. So called “Kitchen type or platform type scales” will not be permitted. 8) Alcoholic beverages or drugs or any person who has consumed alcoholic beverages or drugs will be prohibited bn the market premises; also, the use of profane, abusive, discourteous language on the market area is prohibited and will result in immediate expulsion from the market area. 9) All City, County, State and Federal laws must be observed and each participant is responsible for acquiring license or permits where required. 10) Inferior or unsanitary quality products or produce shall not be offered for sale, and will be ordered removed from the market area by the Market Manager. 11) No collusion on the part of the sellers to fix or establish prices of the commodities offered for sale will be tolerated or permitted in any way. The Market Manager or his Agent will expell those in collusion or attempting to fix or predetermine selling prices fbr'any items or commodities offered for sale on the Farmers Market. 12) Only labled chemicals should be used for pest control on all produce sold from the Farmers Market. Information concerning proper pest control chemicals are available from the Office of the County Agricultural Extension Services. 13) The market is designed primarily as a retail market. Wholesaling items for resale or large orders for home or institutional use will be allowed. 14) Any grievances shall be at the discretion of the Farmers Market Operations Committee. 16) No restaurant facilities are available and selling of meals, etc. is not allowed by individual sellers. 16) No permanent structures of any type will be allowed. 17) Home preserved food items may be sold to include: Conserves, fruit butters, jams, jellies, marmalades preserves, pickles and relishes. 18) Products that may not be sold include: Home canned vegetables, tomatoes, canned meats, and mixtures. 19) All preserved foods must be labled as follows; a) Common or usual name of product b) Name and address of manufacturer c) Date processed d) Ingredients must be listed in 'descending order if more than one ingredient is used. e) Net content; 8 oz., 12 doz., etc. f) Only commercial canning jars and lids may be used g) Paraffin is permissable for sealing jelly only. 20) Approved dairy products - Milk, butter and buttermilk may be sold however. Dairy products must be refrigerated. 21) Not pets will be allowed. 22) Each farmer sets his own prices at the market. The market manager will keep the farmers informed as to the current retail prices at food stores in the market area as a guide in setting appropriate prices. 23) If you plan to bring meat to the market, it must be kept at 40 degrees or colder at all points; therefore, a refrigeration unit is suggested. If poultry is sold and kept on ice, it must be wrapped in a waterproof container, and cannot come in contact with ice or water. It is not permissible to allow water from melting ice to drain on the ground surrounding your market spot; water must be collected and disposed of. All meat sold at the market must be slaughtered and packaged after slaughtered at an approved USDA- inspected slaughterhouse. 24) The process of applying for food stamp authorization is relatively easy, and you are encouraged to do so, although the decision is entirely yours to make. You will be sent an application form, and you will be authorized by a Food Stamp official at the market. Food stamps accepted at the market can then be accepted as payment for any food or food product from human consumption and for needs and plants used in a home garden. 26) The market will be open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. 26) The market committee reserves the right to modify or change these rules as it may become necessary. 27) Violations of any of these rules or regulations shall subject the offender to forfeiture of the privilege of selling. 28) Space will be assigned on a first- come, first-served basis. a) All covered shed spaces shall cost $6.00 per day or until vacated, b) If all covered spaces are filled, then space on the outside will begivenat$3.00.c)Ifa space comes open under the shed, those on the outside, in order of time of arrival, will have first choice to pay $2.00 extra and go under the shed. Shed must be full before outside space is assigned. 29) 'No flea market items. Library Story Hour A children’s Story Hour will be held Wednesday, June 6, at the Vanceboro-Craven County Public Library at 4 p.m. At the Story Hour, Donald Duck’s 60th Birthday will be celebrated. Their will be balloons, Donald Duck movies and Donald Duck stories. To highlight the afternoon, a life size duck resembling Donald Duck will appear.
