Ms. Mitchell had many friends and relatives attending the Computer Buffs Much is being written about computers and it is safe to say all computers are not created equally. That is only the beginning of the story. Not only do computers differ greatly in processing speed and ability but program development languages differ greatly in processing speed and ability. Program development languages are programs which turn human readable computer instructions into “machine” readable instructions. All computers will not perform a given task in about the same time. The time it takes a computer is determined by the basic electronic configuration, coupled with the “efficiency" of the program development language which is used to write the task. A ‘Benchmark' program has been developed by Nevrenchan is a program that calculates all possible change combinations of a dollar bill. This program is said to “wring” out the “internals” of a machine and gives one a pretty good idea of internal processing speed. If you have a computer, you may wish to try running the Basic Benchmark program and reporting the execution time plus the type of computer to the Highlights and we will compile a list for a future issue that will let you know how your computer ranks with others in the area. There are 292 change combinations, so when your computer reaches 292 it will add up the number of combinations and give a total time to that total point. The time has ranged from seven seconds to 48 minutes. 10 F(» H - 20 FOR Q - 30 FOt D =■ 40 FOR N = 50 FOR P = 60 If (P + 70 C = C + TO 100 STEP 50 TO 100 STEP 25 TO 100 STEP 10 TO 100 STEP 5 TO 100 STEP 5 + D + Q + H) > ioO THEN 100 80 PRINT C;P;N/5;D/10;Q/25;H/50 100 NEXT P 110 NEXT N 120 NEXT D 130 NEXT Q 140 NEXT H 150 PRINT "TOTAL"; C mtusms 244-0780 party.
