April 1995 Philanthropy Journal of North Carolina 15 Clothes for charity The Junior League of Raleigh opened a new Bargain Box in Raleigh's Cameron Village. Robert J. Photos by KoH DeBloker NCCU Continued from page 14 The capital campaign, which was a centerpiece of those plans, official ly kicked off Jan. 18. But it stiU has big holes. Despite naming former state Sen. Ken Royall and Durham insurance executive Bert Collins as campaign co-chairs, Chambers still has not recruited the rest of the campaign’s top leadership. The campaign lacks a “case statement” spelling out needs and goals, and key assignments for con tacting major donor prospects have not been made. NCCU has begun building a development database, hut it is only about one-third finished. And NCCU still is a crazy-quilt of fundraising units that have not been centralized. Those separate units - all of which can compete for funds from the same prospective donors - include the development office, alumni associa tion, athletics department and local alumni chapters. Lea says those problems are typi cal of many campaigns and can be overcome. He heheves NCCU’s cam paign will succeed and says his suc cessor will have to he a facilitator, able to balance the many parties involved in the fund drive. “You’re trying to unite a bunch of disparate personalities and orga nizations,” Lea says. “My advice to the next person is, you’ve got to be much more of a facilitator and really a negotiator than I see in the norm^ situation.” Chambers is also optimistic about the school’s campaign. “1 know there are a lot of people who would respond when we put together a program, and that’s what we are going to do,” he says.
