Page 8-THE NEWS-March 1991 HaLailah B’nai B’rith Women Organizations Parentlink is One Year Old Parentlink, a project of Char lotte Chapter B’nai BYith Wom en, celebrated its first birthday with a luncheon meeting of its Advisory Board and Executive Committee at First Citizens Bank on Feb. 8. Parentlink believes that fam ilies can unite in a stand against substance abuse if we have the necessary tools of education and communication. Parentlink pro vides, free of charge, individu alized programs and/or person nel to fit the needs of any group. Parentlink has been endorsed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System and the South west Area Superintendents to develop programs through the PTAs and PTOs at schools in those areas. Parentlink has provided individualized pro grams in the following schools: McKee Road Elementary, Shar on Elementary, McAlpine Ele mentary, Charlotte Country Day School, Beverly Woods, Lansdowne, Huntingtowne Farms and Hidden Valley Ele mentary. Other schools continue to show interest in our program. FIRST YEAR SUMMARY We have over 75 volunteers who have worked with Paren tlink and have involved over 20,000 people in the program. Presentations have been made to churches, PTAs, other parent groups in Mecklenburg, Union and Lincoln Counties. Over 25 businesses and agencies have been involved. Funding (either in-kind-servi ces or monies) has been received from Patton Foundation, Blum- enthal Foundation, Carolyn Bechtel, City of Charlotte, Guest Quarters, US Air, International Minute Press, Sanford Rose Association, Robyn’s Textile Company, Amethyst, B’nai B’rith Women, Charlotte Hous ing Authority, Drug Education Center, Trinity Presbyterian Church, Charlotte Country Day School, Reid’s, Freedom from Chemical Dependency, Radis- son Hotel, First Charlotte Bank, Mark HI Financial Corporation and First Citizens Bank. The following special events were held: • Mar. 13, 1990 — Lonise Bias delivered her “Message of Hope” to over 250 people. • Oct. 12, 1990 — Members of the Cleveland and Baltimore World Soccer Teams delivered anti-substance abuse messages to 19 CMS elementary schools. • Oct. 24, 1990 — Red rib bons given to 5,000 students in Parentlink-affiliated schools. • Jan. 14, 1991 — Renee Soulis of Freedom from Chem ical Dependency, Massachusetts spoke on “Creating a Family- Centered Approach to Preven tion of Alcohol and Drug Use by Children.” On Jan. 27, HaLailah BBW sponsored one of the trees plant ed in the JCC’s Tu B’Shevat program. It was planted on the larger playground and is in honor of all HaLailah members. In mid-March a canned food drive for Jewish Family Services will begin. A box will be placed near the front entrance of the JCC for donations of Passover food and other items. HaLailah will again be making Passover holiday baskets. Monetary do nations are needed so please call Randi Defilipp, 541-5861, if you can help. Michelle Perlmutter will be speaking on “Women and Self- Esteem” on Mar. 13, 7:30 p.m. at Shalom Park. The Becky Shulimson Child ren’s Library Fund needs addi tional donations; call Jan Mar cus, 366-7716. BBW philanthro py cards are available to send in honor or in memory of some one. We also have Happy Birth day, Get Well, Mazel Tov, and Bar/Bat Mitzyah cards. ORT Mrs. North Carolina 1990, Judy Bowmar, was the guest speaker of Charlotte’s Crown City ORT Chapter on Feb. 5. Hfer talk on “Set Your Goals & Go” was a dynamite presenta tion. Our thanks go to our wonderful host. First Citizens Bank on S. Tryon St. for the room and excellent luncheon. On March 17, the Chapter will hold its “Cash Giving Gala” at the Park Crossing Club, 6:30-9:30 p.m. The cocktail-buffet dinner is $12.50 per person. Your check is your reservation. At the Gala Honor Roll Donors and our Capital Funds Contributors will be recognized. Women’s American ORT has been in the vanguard of social and humanitarian action since 1927, improving the quality of Jewish life worldwide through technological and vocational education. Today its resources are being utilized to offset the situation created by the war in the Middle East and to help thousands of Soviet emigres retrain and fmd jobs as they begin their acculturation pro cess. Planned for Sunday, Apr. 21, it will be a perfect opportunity to spend some fun time with the young members in our families. The program includes a won derful luncheon at the Adam’s Mark Hotel and fashion shows for both adults and children presented by Talbot’s of Special ty Shops in the Park. In keeping with the spirit to bridge the generations, Fred Astaire Dance Studio will entertain us with a showcase of dance styles from different eras. We are excited and working hard to make this a memorable occasion. Adult and Child Life Memberships make a most meaningful gift to someone special in your life.
