) Weekend roundup : Pack's 6th-ranked women deck Heels sixm-ranKea N.c. State beat Nm-th Carolina, 74-62, in a women's basketball game at Carmichael Auditorium Saturday night, but the game left the UNC contingent in better spirits than has been the case after other recent losses. "This was one of our strongest efforts of the season," UIC Coach Angela Lumpkin said. "We are Comparable to them, and we can beat them in the state tournament (this weekend)." Lumpkin was especially pleased with the defensive work of Joan Leggett against State center Genia Beasley, the most valuable player in the recent Virginia Invitational Tournament. Beasley made only six of 17 field goal attempts, well below her 59 per cent season average. "This had to be the worst game of her life." State Coach Kay Yow said of Beasley's performance. "It's encouraging to see the others take part, though." The key to the State win was free-throw shooting. State made 30 of 35, while Carolina was eight of 18. Yow said her team had been working on free throws in practice all week by shooting five of them in between one-minute sessions of intense work on something else. Carolina was leading 14-10 midway through the first half when State switched from a man-to-man defense to a 2-3 zone. The Tar Heels didn't score in the next four minutes while State put in 14, and Carolina never got closer than eight the rest of the game. The foul trouble of UNC senior co captains Mika Long and Cat hey Daniels, playing their last home games, contributed to the success of the zone. Both played less than 25 minutes, and the absence of Long's outside shooting and Daniels', penetration handicapped the Tar Heels. . - fZ?S x ' - Vi ' "A A. ? The Cavaliers, who recently defeated VPI, 24-14, and the Tar Heels (10-5) are both thinking ahead to the all-important ACC wrestling tournament which is scheduled for March 3 4 at College Park, Md. PETE MITCHELL Fencers topple Duke The blades of the UNC fencing team have not been idle since Thursday night when the men's team handed Duke a 22-5 loss in the last home dual meet of the season. All the seniors on the team fenced and won at least one bout. Foilsman Ken Williams' win at 13-1 clinched the match for Carolina. The win over the Blue Devils upped the Heels' conference mark to 64) and their overall record to 8-1. The men then left for New York to fence the City College of New York and St. John's on Friday. The women's teams hosted Randolph Macon Saturday in Woollen Gym. Ahead 4 3, the A team went on to win eight straight bouts before dropping the last bout, to claim a 12-4 victory. The win included four victories by Cathy Swan and three each by team captain Kathi Kronenfeld and Garney Ingram. They moved very well on the strip. They used the fundamentals of fencing very well," . assistant coach Charlie Brown said. The B team, led by Patti Urquhart's three wins, won 9-7. After the meet, Kronenfeld and Swan flew to San Francisco to compete Sunday in the JuniorOlympics in the under-20 group. Rich Weil will fly from New York to California to fence in the under-20 sabre competition. Monday Weil, a sophomore, is making his second straight appearance; Kronenfeld and Swan are appearing for the first time. KEN ROBERTS Gymnasts win tri-meet The UNC women's gymnastics team racked up two more wins Saturday when it scored 121 points to defeat South Carolina (80) and Winthrop (45). Led by freshman Tia Walker's three firsts, the Tar Heels swept every first place of the meet to capture impressive victories. Walker took the top marks in both the vault (8.6) and floor (8.5) events which set her up for a 32.45 first in the all-around competition. To round out the Tar Heel sweep, another freshman, Mary Beth Elrod, grabbed first on the uneven parallel bars, with an 8.55, and Teresa Trice pranced her way to 8.35 balance beam honors. The win gave Coach Ken Ourso's squad a 7-2 record, with only next week's home meet against Georgia to play before the North Carolina Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women meet March 7-8. I think they rrtade almost every shot down the line." The Cavaliers' second-half surge was aided by a thunderous crowd. Their cheers, however, turned into boos when Smith decided to go into the four corners. "Anytime we go to the four corners, there is going to be comment," the UNC coach said. "But practically every time we had the ball in the four corners, we got fouled or we got a layup. I think that's a pretty good offense." UNC did just that, hitting 13 of 19 second half field goal attempts for 63 per cent compared to Virginia's 71 percent mark (16 of 22). For the game, UNC won the percentage war, 60.5 to 51. Virginia's scoring burden was shouldered by Owens, Otis Fulton and Marc Iavaroni, who scored 13, 12 and 10 points respectively. Fulton also had 10 rebounds while Iavaroni pulled down six. For UNC, O'Koren was followed by Davis with 17 and Phil Ford with 21 points. John K uester was the only other Tar Heel to score, adding five points. Injured center Tommy LaGarde, who missed his third straight game because of a knee injury, left an apparent void in UNC's lineup. LaGarde's status remains uncertain. Smith said that tests will be performed to determine if the 6-foot-10 senior had suffered any cartilage damage. Regardless, he is not expected to play in the Tar Heels' next game against N.C. State Wednesday in Carmichael Auditorium. e$0i Women golfers open a ENERGY SAVING HOURS 9-5 DAILY; TILL NOONSAT The UNC women's golf team is in Winter Haven, Fla. through Tuesday participating in the Rollins-Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational.
