Cooley, "Chairman." 1 Remove the Stump. , It is a remarkable thing: that so ) many farmers will permit stumps, stumps by the do&en, stamps by the hundred, to remain in their fields, when even stump is not only an unsightly but a costly encum brance, lu travelling on tbe rail road a few days ago, but a few miles from Kaleigb. 111 a beautiful range of country, just undulating euough for good drainage, we saw a field containing a hundred acres or more, with stumps so numerous and close together that plowing a straight furrow would be an utter impossibility. How long these stumps have stood there we do not know, but, judging from their de cayed appearance, probably many years, now mucn tuey nave cost (he owner ot that field in the loss of time in plowing hut laud and iu the cultivation of bis crops, in tbe wear and tear of stock, harness and farm implements he will never know, tecauc he has piobably never given the subject a moment's thought. Hut it has cost him money all tbe name, much money every year, ;tnd will cost him much every year they stand there. They 'not only cost bun money thus di rect) but indirectly tbey oost him much more, in preventing thorough culture, in taking up mnch valuable land which could be profitably utilized, and by preventing the readv use ol improved machinery lor plowing, cultivating aud lor harvesting the ripened crops. We live in a rapid age, nn age not only of uick thought, but of quick execution. Inventive genius has given us machinery which has multiplied productive power so that one man now is the equivalent of scores ol men a decade or two. And inventive genius has not been idle on the I arm. It has given us ma chines to do about everything that is to be done upon tbe farm from tnruing the soil to threshing the grain. It has given us tbe milky plow upon which the farmer sits and rides at ease while be plows bis land, instead ol trudging along wearily between the handles of the plow. Jt has given as the sulky cultivatm constructed upon the same principle upon which tbe driver rides. It bus given as tbe mower upon which the farmer sits while bis waving fields of grass fall before the swiftly mowing scythe, and the self binder which cuts and binds ths ripened grain and lays it aside ready for the stacker. With all of lhee tbe work of many hands is speedily and effectually done by a tew. n is thus that marvelous products of tbe grain growing west have become a poRsibility; ma chinery takes the place of men, and the acreage and product are multi plied. With a couple ol teams, equipped with this machinery the western farmer will cultivate a bun dred acres or more in wheat, oats, corn, grass, potatoes, iVc, keep a considerable number of cattle, and hogs, and have reasonable time for rest and recreation too. Bnt be couldn't do it it be had to contend with an army of resisting stamps. These make the effective nse of machinery an impossibility and ef fectual! block tbe path of progress. If tbe removal of them was a labo rious or costly undertaking that might be a reason why tbey are permitted to remain. Bnt it is not. Tbey may be easily removed with explosive agencies, burned with oil, dug oat or pulled oat with ma chinery devised lor that pnrpoea, and sold at a price that any ordi nary farmer, with stnmpy fields can afford to pay, and which could be purchased at an insignificant sam to each if several farmers hav ing such fields were to club togeth er and boy one in common ; or a man of mechanical torn of mind could easily contrive an apparatus which with the ne of a couple of oxen or horse or mnlee wonkl answej tbe purpose very well. Tbe time and the money spent is eradicating these costly nuisances win be both well invested and even work done npon the farm for tbe time takes and money spent will pay tbe far mer be t ter. Struck a Bazz Saw. A curious t accident occurred re cently in the terra cotta works at Pullman. Aimer I ekes, assistant engineer, was engaged in oiling the revolving-rods, when a portion of his clothing caught between a wheels nd a belt. He was whirled around several times and was tbeu thrown soma distance, striking a swiftly revolving circular saw. The instrument cut tbe unfortunate employee from his neck to bis lips in a terrible manner. He lived to be removed to bt. Luke's Hospital. His injuries proved fatal. Chicago 7ime.
