The Lady Mountaineers fell to 1-2 with a 63-52 loss to a powerful Crest team which is regarded as the team to beat in the Northwestern 4- A Conference. Kings Mountain's boys dropped their third game in a row in the nightcap, 79-66, as the Chargers ran their early season record to 3-1. Crest, getting 23 points from sophomore Shamar Finney, led most of the way but the Mountaineers did put on a rally in the second half as Alex Burris came off the bench to give the team a spark. KM trailed by 16 points at the half, but trimmed the Crest lead to 57-48 going into the fourth quarter. In the end, though, the Mountaineers failed to convert some key free throw opportunities and the Chargers were able to put the game on ice. Eric Tate again led the KM scor- ing with 25 points and Burris added 13. The Crest girls jumped to a 14- 10 first quarter lead and stayed out front the rest of the way, but the Lady Mountaineers gave a good ef- fort. The big difference in the game was the dominating inside play of the Lady Chargers, especially Temeshia Dawkins who fired in 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Karma Edwards added 19. Kisha Hamrick scored 15 points and Tina Welch and Tammie Welch added 12 each for Kings Mountain. See Crest, 7-A Kings Mountain High's varsity basketball teams suffered a double loss to good Clover, SC teams Friday night at the KMHS gym. The Clover girls built a big first half lead but had to fight off a KM comeback bid to win the opener 43-36. Clover's boys grabbed the lead late in the first half and held on the rest of the way to post a 83- 77 win. The two KM teams travel to Clover Friday for a rematch, then end their pre-holiday schedule at home on Tuesday, December 19 against Mooresville's Blue Devils. Clover's girls built a 26-14 half- time advantage and appeared on their way to a blowout. But Kings Mountain used a pressing defense in the second half to almost pull it out. The Lady Mountaineers cut the Clover margin to 38-36 on a three-point play by Keshia Hamrick with 1:03 remaining, but Clover iced the game at the foul line. Renata Phillips scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half to lead the Clever attack, but her biggest contribution came late in the game when she blocked five shots. Tasha Redi scored six of her eight points from the foul line in the fourth quarter as the Clover ladies ran their record to 2-0. Niki Ingram scored 11 points and Hamrick nine for the Mountaineers, who fell to 1-1. Clover had two big scoring runs at the end of the first and second periods to take command against the Mountaineers. Kings Mountain led 12-7 when. the Blue Eagles went on a 15-2 run over the final three minutes of the first period to take a 22-14 lead. The Mountaineers battled back to gain the lead again at 32-31 on a three-pointer by Justin Champion, but Clover went on a 15-6 run al the end of the second period to take Football banquet Monday at KM HS Kings Mountain High's football banquet will be held Monday, December 18 at 6 p.m. at the school cafeteria. KMHS cheerleaders will also be honored. Tickets are $7 and may be pur- chased at the KMHS office. The Mountaineers never re- gained the lead but stayed within striking distance all the way. Kings Mountain got in early foul trouble and eventually lost their leading scorer, Eric Tate, who had 29 points. Champion added 17 and John Sizemore had 10. Four players hit double digits for the Blue Eagles, including Brett Gaines with 21, Rashad Conwell with 20, Travis Robbins with 18, and Quincey Hemphill with 12.
