SPORTS SoilRtOFS Fifty In Kinston Blue Jays Make Baseball History . West Craven Highlights, June 14,1984, Page 7 Greg Griffin, Changes are certainly not an uncommon thing at this level either, Afterall, the Toronto organization is trying to develop the talent the best it knows how, and judging by the Blue Jays track record they must be doing something right. At this writing, the big team is 3)^ games behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League East pennant race. All we keep hearing about is how the Baltimore Orioles are going to make their run at the Tigers, but nobody mentions Toronto. Watch out for the Blue Jaysl Supposedly, the sign of a good team is one that wins the one-run games. Well believe it or not, the club with the best one-run record in the Carolina League is in last place, Salem. The Redbirds are 10-4 in one-run games this year. This is not to say the Birds are not a good club, in fact, they took five of seven games from the Blue Jays in the first-half, and at this writing have recovered from a terrible tailspin to win 12 and lose 7, The point is, the Blue Jays can do the same and with a break here- and-there the Jays have the opportunity to finish the first-half with a respectable record. You might want to know how some of our ex-Kinston Blue Jays are doing these days. Many of them are helping Johnny “Mac” to the first-half championship in the Southern League’s Western Division. Jim Bishop is batting over .300, Ken Kinnard is smacking the baseball as a lefthanded batter, Mike Sharperson is playing a “sharp” second base, Davd Shipanoof as a starter has won two games, Dave Wells threw his second shutout since joining Knoxville, Kevin Aitcheson is batting over .300 and Fred McGriff smacked five homers in seven games, including two towering shots in one game. So ex-Kinston talent is making its mark in Knoxville, and we hope when the dust clears, it results in a championship for Johnny “Mac.” The Blue Jays will be at Grainger Stadium tonight against the Peninsula Pilots for a 7:30 game, then the Durham Bulls come in for two games tomorrow and Tuesday nights at 7:30. After commuting to Durham for two night games Wednesday and Thursday nights, the Jays conclude the first-half with four games against Winston-Salem Friday through Monday nights at 7:30. Of course, the San Diego Chicken makes his first-ever Kinston appearance on Sunday, June 17, in what should make history for Kinston baseball. The Vanceboro Senators finished 2nd in the Kinston Fairgrounds Invitational Tournament on Saturday, June 9, 1984. The Senators played in the championship game against the Goodyear BLUE JAYS . . .Chatter... Sluggers, a Class C team out of Kinston. The Senators wish to extend a very special thank you to Toby Eason for his sponsorship in this tournament. The Kinston Blue Jays are about to make Baseball History in Kinston, during their next homestand. On Sunday night, June 17, when the Jays host the Winston- Salem Spirits in a 7:30 game, the San Diego Chicken will be in attendance. It will mark the first time in Kinston Baseball History that Baseball’s Master of Entertainment has come to Eastern North Carolina. Baseball’s fair-feathered friend has performed before millions of people from coast- to-coast to the far corners of the globe. Now he comes to Grainger Stadium ready to thrill his audience with a breath-taking arrival, eye charts for umpires and countless other zany antics. It should be a night to remember, when the Chicken takes Kinston by storm! ^ 1 I 1 y fp ebi M T N T 1 4 C 5 1 T 1 11 13 13 M 14 IS 11 11 a 31 a s a 3T a fSo If M T fl r 1 “Is 2 11 3 17 4 8 11 M 18 22 a 34 a a a v 30 fJur M T w T 3 4 3 8 r ' * s “14 ' ID 11 13 13 •17 M/Q 24 a 21 S T a a 27 « E /icn M T W T r 1 4 1 1 7 1 11 13 13 M/O n 11 11 c a 31 a a a 37 a a / fMa\ i] Ml T w ’ Ll 1 1 7 1 C t a 13 14 18 11 17 M 28 31 a a 34 1 a a 38 31 / LEGEND ® First and Last Days ot School Year S’.JW MAKE-UP DAYS it Holiday H No School lor Students When Numbers are in Gray a Vacation or Workday Depend ing Upon Rate Based on State Board of Education Action By DAN LOVALLO If you think you can’t tell the Kinston Blue Jays without a roster these days you maybe right. The Blue Jays had several moj^ roster changes this week, bringing to 18 the number of plfjjP' moves made since the start of the season. That includes pit^er Glenn Gallagher leaving Kinston twice and outfielder Rico Sutton leaving and returning to Kinston once. Since the season started eight new players have been added to the roster with one having already departed, Ed Dennis, who started the season at Florence and was returned to that club after a brief but productive hiatis with Kinston. Two of the latest moves involve pitchers being assigned to higher classifications, and we hope it’s a continuous journey on the road to bigger and better things. Gallagher goes to Knoxville, Toronto’s AA club in the Southern League and Johnny Taylor to Syracuse of the International League. For “JT” it’s the second journey to AAA-ball for him. He has a brief fling with Hawaii, Pittsburgh’s AAA entry last year. Incidentally, “JT” concluded his Kinston stay on a high note, hurling 3 2-3 innings of scoreless relief against the Salem Redbirds Wednesday night, striking out 7 men during the stint. • identally, you’re probably wondering who the Kinston rs are that did not start the season with the club. In addition to Dennis, they are pitchers Mark Clemons, Mike Cullen, Jose Mesa and Guillermo Valenzuela and outfielders Otis Green and [~Q~| End of 6 Weeks- End of School Month [W[ Designated Teacher WofKday (C | Report Card Day OPENING SOON Azalea Mobile Homes Lowest prices in Eastern North Carolina Coming to Vanceboro Don’t buy before you see us.
