There was something to interest everyone. Craft boothes lined the Bicentennial Park grounds as if it were a state fair. Everyone was in a festive mood with cold drinks, pop corn, hot dogs, clogging, magic tricks, plus plenty of good singing. Oh yes, let’s not forget the rafts, canoes, and whatever made its appearance on the river. The first event was a canoe race. This was won by Bryan Mills and Brad Sutton of New Bern in Bryan’s handcrafted canoe. This was their fourth win and their time was 35 minutes. Fourth place went to Wayne and Jo Ellen Helzer finishing in 45 minutes. In the regular raft race clayroot had its entry by dedicated D. H. Conley High School young men, Chris Haddock, raft captain; Craig Forlins; Lee Roach; and Anthony Smith. Danita Kennedy was on board to make the raft entry look good. They were out there with the best of them just having a lot of fun. The winner was Weyerhaeuser Co’s “Miss Wey Co.” captained by Ray Gaboon. The speed raft race was captured by “liickety Split” with Jimmy Daniel as the captain. Second place went to The Tar River Ratsi whose captain was Jimmy Grace. Dr. W. Robert Borom gave a visit from Bishop Francis Asbury at the N.C. annual conference celebration of 200 years of Methodism during the recent conference at Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C. Mrs. R.L. Cannon, Jr., was instrumental in getting Dr. Borom to participate in the celebration. She was a member of the Conference task force for the 200 year celebration. pep®' .a 2 liter 990 Vanceboro Pharmacy i Vanceboro 244-1086 (Photo by Richard Cannon) Marines haul rubber raft to river.
